Is "get my drift" an anachronism or does the phrase go back many years?
It's never bothered me. It's one of my favorite lines.

what's that from?
RentBoy86, It's from "A Little Priest" in Sweeney Todd
RentBoy: The lyric is from the musical Sweeney Todd. It's the introduction to the song, "A Little Priest."

It's origins are most like maritime, so I'd imagine that it is an expression that predates the year Sweeney is set.

Well, the reference to actors always arriving overdone feels more like Sondheim talking than Sweeney, too, but it's okay. The whole number is about wordplay- I mean, it's not as bad as "You're the Top" or anything, but occassional shifts a bit outside the story in this one instance are acceptable.
