madcap, I agree with you 100% about "YF". It is the best show ever (IMO) but the critics were to busy wrongfully comparing it to "The Producers". I do remember a time when "word of mouth" helped a show like "Blood Brothers", but now people hear the critical slam and that's it. All the money and hard work that was put into a show might have well been flushed down the toilet. This is why I never wait for reviews. I always buy early and make my won opinion, and if I like I tell my friends and family to go see it. I am sort of the official theatre critic at work and people come to me for "my" review. Many people tell me they are so glad they did not listen to the reviews and went with what I said.

A Director - I agree about certain subjects working better in film and certain subjects working better on stage. They are different media. But this I don't completely agree with:

"Theatre is an actor's medium; film is a director's medium."

Certainly when an actor is performing on the stage s/he is holding the reins and there is not much a director can do. In film an editor (usually under the supervision of the director) can do all sorts of things with an actor's performance (not to mention the control the director has behind the camera). However, there are some actors who prefer the screen to stage because that medium suits them better.

Likewise, there is a lot a stage director can do to format the entire stage production, the approach, interpretation, etc.

While I understand your point, I think the above quote is way oversimplified.

Yeah, I was just comparing theater to movies, as there are so many of each, that we all like to be entertained differently. Like, I loved Spamalot, but I don't think I would be interested in seeing something like Young Frankenstein.

And yes, I absolutely do hate it when people try to compare a movie from a musical to the musical itself, because there are things that look good on stage, that wouldn't work in a movie, and vis versa.
