This year's "Egregiously Overlooked"?

So what are the chances of a "Julie Andrews" happening this year where one performer is the ONLY nomination a show receives?
And would that performer have the class/tenacity to pull a Julie by refusing a nod?
What if Lansbury is the only nom for Deuce?
Cerveris for LoveMusik?
Block for Pirate Queen?
Bundy for Legally Blonde?

THE CLEAN HOUSE was wonderful, but absolutely does not belong on Broadway.
I wouldn't say that any of Sueleen's examples are likely.
LOVEMUSIK has a lock in Donna Murphy and probably for most of the design categories. The orchestrations and the book are also a strong possibility...so I don't think LOVEMUSIK is a realistic choice.
DEUCE may only get one nomination for Lansbury, but it wouldn't be egregiously. VICTOR/VICTORIA was something that should have been nominated in a bunch of categories - Supporting Actress, set, lighting, orchestrations, book, etc. It was blatantly and purposely snubbed. It's a rare case. DEUCE is just plain awful...so it wouldn't be egregious.
BLONDE has a great chance in a few of the categories - namely choreography, set design, costume design, and musical. If it did manage to only squeak out one nomination, it probably wouldn't be for Bundy but for choreography - and in that case it also wouldn't be so egregious.
THE PIRATE QUEEN is a strong contendor in the costume and choreography categories. Again - the show doesn't merit any other nominations, so a snub wouldn't be egregious.

Posted: 4/30/07 at 3:29pmLansbury, the best thing about Deuce, will probably be the only nomination for the show and perhaps the only single nomination this year, though I can see A Chorus Line just getting nominated for revival and nothing else.

Yes, but this thread isn't about things that are only getting their one deserved nomination.
It's about shows that are blatantly snubbed in favor or something less stellar.
A CHORUS LINE is only eligible in 3 categories, and we all know that the cast is the worst thing about this revival. It wouldn't be egregious, it would be expcted.

I didn't mean for this to be a discussion of who is or isn't worthy of an nomination, but of the character of the lead actors who may be nominated at the exclusion of anyone else involved in the production.
Julie Andrews was very close to V/V, of course, and the fact that not one other person was nominated was, she felt, a slap in the face to her close collaborators who gave their blood sweat and tears to that show from day one.
So, take Block, for example. She has been involved with PQ since the very beginning, as have most of the technical team and the cast. If she were the only one to get a nom, do you think she would consider refusing the nomination to stand in solidarity with her company?

Block's own money isn't in the show. Andrews had all kinds of motivation for doing what she did that no one else eligible to be nominated this year does.

Posted: 4/30/07 at 10:54pmNot to the same extent, and her husband isn't the producer/director.

Hell no! I think her company would slap her silly if she refused the nomination. Are you even kidding me? The costumes, the make up, the dancing, the songs, the direction... they all have a huge part in shaping her Grania. It's up to her to take what they give her and deliver but if she gets nominated it's like a little bit of all of them got nominated too (sort of... ok, sappy post over).

Wow, Popular, I had NO idea you'd chime in on that one.
Do you get a message sent to your cell phone every time "Stephanie Block" or "Pirate Queen" is mentioned?
#16re: This year's 'Egregiously Overlooked'?
Posted: 4/30/07 at 11:03pmThe fact is, Andrews didn't have to worry about her career stalling or ending because of her statement. Who else can say that this year, besides Lansbury?

Right.
The Andrews situation is something so specific and so rare that nothing can be compared to it.

Posted: 4/30/07 at 11:39pmso, what exactly is the story about Victor / Victoria? Why did it not get any nominations?

I'm not the right person to answer this, but I believe that many people dislike Blake Edwards and therefore snubbed his production.
I'm sure Rath, Margo, Bennett, etc. know more about this.

Posted: 4/30/07 at 11:45pmI just looked at the tony awards website...man, it was snubbed. I really like this show, and State Fair! Swingin on a Star for best musical...really?

Exactly.
A lot of people thought V/V was horrible. I loved it - and it certainly deserved nominations of Musical, Supporting Actress, Orchestrations, Score, Lighting, Choreography, Scenic Design, etc.

I thought Julie's cold shoulder was a stand of solidarity with her "family" and not about money, but you are probably right. As you all know, I always look for the good in people and thought Julie was above such pettiness...(can someone splash some water on Rath's face?)
Does anyone know how the V/V company reacted to Julie's refusal of the nomination? Were they honored? Pissed? Or too drunk to care?
