This article talks about the painful fact that attendance of Broadway shows are going down while ticket prices go up.

What do you think needs to happen so average ticket prices go down?
They are not going to.
Economic laws of supply and demand would need to be reversed…
And there is already a thread on (what I can only assume is) this article.
Not goin to happen. Just like the price of movies, or milk, or just about everything else.
The best you can hope for is that prices stay stanant for a while.

I think the major reason attendance was down was because of Sandy, not ticket prices. I was going to shows after Sandy and they were selling us Mez seats and moving us to orchestra seats to fill it in. It was a dismal couple of weeks. Also the winter weather did not help. Ticket prices may have contributed but it is not the main reason IMHO.
I don't see Sandy being the major reason. Prices went up. I know people who were affected by the storm who go to the theatre but their main reason for not going as much is the price of tickets. They had cut back before the storm. I know people in group sales and they are doing a lot of business. Also, the economy is still not great. Prices on everything are going up and people are not getting raises to keep up. I am a witness to that. JMO

They should study calculators. When calculators first came out, they were $700. Now you can get one for 99 cents.
Why should they reduce prices? Box Offices have been hitting record highs even if not every seat has a butt in it. Tickets will remain these prices until the economy gets stronger and more people attend shows… then they will go up again! Let us see what happens when King Kong comes to NY!
Gothampc, really? I mean REALLY. The cost of calculators (and computers, and TV sets, and all electronics) has come down because the internal components have become miniaturized and the cost of manufacture has come down drastically. Thus, the savings has been passed on to the consumer. Conversely, the cost of producing a Broadway show has risen dramatically.
Thats's what studying calculators will tell you. Nothing of value to this issue.
I had been wracking my brain trying to come up with a worse analogy than calculators. I couldn't think of a single one. It was a less than useless comparison.

No one seems to mention that the quality of shows is down.
Remember, this is the season that gave us THE ANARCHIST, THE TESTAMENT OF MARY, ORPHANS and HARVEY.

I liked Harvey, and Pippin is top notch.

I'm truly glad you liked HARVEY.
There's no accounting for taste in today's world. There are actually a few people who think Amanda Bynes looks good in her blond wig.

Says the man who actually liked the truly worse than amateur production of "Godspell". You're right, no accounting for taste.

Read this. I blame Sandy as stated in my earlier post. Looks like I am not alone.
