Hello!
My family and I are headed into the city the weekend of the 18-19th. We want to see one show as a family and my daughter and I will see an additional show.
Do you recommend trying to get discount tickets before hand or trying our luck at day of tickets/discount ticket booths when we get there?
Thanks so much for your thoughts and opinions!

Isn't this time like a peak tourist season?

I'd personally just buy the tickets.

Go to www.broadwaybox.com and see what discounts are available for the days you want. It's a busy time in the theatre at that point and you'd be best to buy your tickets in advance.

If you can find discounts for what you want to see by all means snap them up now.

Depends on the show you're wanting to see. But you're very likely to be able to get better prices and better seats if you buy ahead of time!

What show were you interested in?
Also TDF may have some good choices up if you aren't a member it could be good to become a member. It pays for itself in 1 show

Of the shows you're listed
ELF is gonna be tough (also I think that the weekend the price jumps up)
They might still be doing student rush then(im not sure) If they do have it. It'd be $42 each.
I'd honestly Get Elf in advance because their's a slim chance they'd have rush that weekend. I was just at the box office and the girl lady weekends are close to if not sold out already. Keep in mind too Elf has standing room when they are sold out so you guys could always do SRO if u want to save $.

Phantom: They don't have rush, But I think you'd be ok getting that one day of. I mean it's Phantom them. They do SRO for $26.50 when they are sold out(But I don't think Phantom is a show you're gonna wanna stand for). And I know BW Box has discounts up, and it's been on TDF for a few shows. Also as a side note
I saw the show during the summer on a Saturday night. Asked if they had SRO the guy said they weren't sold out to offer SRO but he nicely sold me a mezz ticket for $36.50 (so u can always just try the box office and see what they have never hurts to ask)

In the heights might be tough I mean they have the lottery and SRO when it's sold out. But also keep in mind the show is closing January 9th so people are all trying to see it one last time. Also I think Chris Jackson starts again on the 18th. Form what I've seen with Heights sometimes they'll do the Partial view Orch's for $40 after lotto. Also they have $41 seats in the back mezz(I'd get those now if u wanna have def. seats). I think their was also a discount code around for $78(ish) seats in Orch and $50sometimes in the mezz.

Memphis: They have student rush for $26.50 sold when the box office opens. Also SRO for $21.50 when its sold out. But honestly I felt like I saw the show back when it was called Hairspray. Memphis is nothing special. I'd honestly save the slot for something better. Maybe check out Next to normal.

Mary Poppins: They have balcony seats for I believe around $30 also the boxes are I believe $30 as well. They also have a student rush for $30. (U shouldn't have a problem getting tix for MP)

I'd honestly suggest Next to Normal before it closes. It's one of the best things I've seen on Broadway in a long time. I've seen it 16 times and I still cry everytime. It's truly amazing.

Hope that helped and enjoy you're trip

Thanks for the great info!
How are the balcony seats for Mary Poppins? I am not familiar with these theaters so hard to know where the best seats might be! Any tips on where to sit for Phantom?
Is Next To Normal appropriate for kids? I know I would love to see it, but not sure my 9 and 13 year old would appreciate it the way my hubby and I would...
Thanks for your feedback!

I think Next to Normal is recommended for ages 14 and up. So, for me, that's not something I think I'd take my kids of those ages to go and see. It's pretty heavy stuff.

There's a discount code for Phantom on BroadwayBox.com that is good through the matinee on Dec 18. Best seats for Phantom are the front of the mezzanine or center orchestra around rows D-M, though really the only seats in the orchestra you'd want to avoid are those on the far sides or way in the back under the overhang. I've seen the show from just about every viewing angle (including SRO twice) and there's really not a bad seat in the house.

I checked, and there are two seats available with the discount for row B of the Mezz on Dec 18th.

Re: Next to Normal and kid of your age.

both my kids (age 10 and 13) LOVE the music to the show and wore me down on taking them once they announced closing. We went about a month ago. By intermission, the 10 year old was quite restless, and the 13 was not loving it. (They knew what they were in for)

By the end of the show, my dd (13) was bawling her eyes out (a real first for her at a broadway production), and the 10 year old was still pretty non plussed. (He GOT it, he just didn't connect with it.) They will both tell you they liked it, the 13 year old won over entirely by the second act.

They did both agree with me, after the fact, that maybe it was a bit much for them.

Thanks so much for the great info dramamama! I am intrigued by Next To Normal, I really think it might blow my daughter away, which is what I am hoping to have happen. I know she would like Phantom too, but I would like to take her to something that kind of strikes her to the core, she is an aspiring thespian, and I think she would really appreciate it!

Any advice on where to sit for a show like Mary Poppins? I need to add some levity to our trip too! :)

Thanks!
