No theatre has been set, and the leads are yet to be cast. That probably would not be a selling point for any other musical revival, but the forthcoming Broadway run of Grease will no doubt get a big boost from NBC's reality casting show "You're The One That I Want," which begins the same day tickets go on sale: Jan. 7.
Why even bother? Are people really gonna buy tickets in anticipation of the winners?

Posted: 1/5/07 at 5:30pmDo you mean why even bother buying tickets? I think that lots of people are going to want to see this show, regardless of who the winners are. It's a popular show and the fact that it will be on primetime tv on a weekly basis reminding people to buy tickets is the kind of publicity all shows would kill for.

I have no desire to see a GREASE revival...so the ONLY reason I would see this show would be the cast.
Not just Sandy and Danny. If I wind up hating who they pick to play Sandy and Danny and I love some of the other cast members I'd go see it. What I'm saying is...I don't see why people would buy tickets without even knowing ONE cast member.
Unless they were hardcore GREASE fans.

Posted: 1/5/07 at 5:40pmI personally feel it's over kill. Too much publicity to the point of making someone sick of hearing about it. I think it's bastardizing Broadway and ruins everything a real revival stands for.

Posted: 1/5/07 at 6:02pmMusical theatre has no where near the level of exposure in the UK that you guys have and yet the Maria programme resulted in hyper sales for a dated old warhorse. The winner has been all over the BBC ever since and some tabloids. The formula seems to work and imagine it will replicate well with Grease and Broadway. Not saying its a great formula but people are going to get work out of it!

"How do you sell tickets to a show that has no theatre?"
I was thinking the same thing. The sad thing is the general public does not know that. I don't think many people would buy a ticket to a show with no theater.

Saw it originally off broadway at the Eden Theater & the Brooke Shields revival. No intention of seeing it again no matter who is in it

Posted: 1/5/07 at 6:42pmI don't see how she could if she is in LB. I'm sure she has a year contract with that. I am sure it will still be open when Grease opens....I just don't see why tickets are going on sale so early. They don't even have a theater booked yet.

I think GREASE will be able to sell many many tickets before the cast is even cast, I mean, hey, it is the most popular movie musical of all time
I'm still going to wait to buy my tickets though
Anyone know up till what month they are selling seats?

Posted: 1/5/07 at 6:55pmShe was offered Rizzo but, did not take it and ErinRebecca, i like you but, not to sound mean I just want real theatre back. That is my true explanation of what I wrote below. Real revivals like Oklahoma, Carousel.. examples. Not Pop crap that will have American Idol calibar people. I did not audition for this, had no desire because frankly I am not right for this show but, a good friend auditioned and the judges told her she was "too fat" at a size 6 to be considered for Sandy. Who the hell do they think they are? They could have simply said "thank you, you are not what we are looking for" but, to make for good tv they have to get vicious? NBC is making the show look bad for Broadway because the TV show looks horrible and Jay Leno didn't help much last night having about 20 people perform on his show who were the must horrific singers. Just get Bway back to the way it was or cast a show without reality tv. There are PLENTY of talented people out there and wonderful casting directors. It's going to get a little old for UK and here with "sound of music" "joseph" and now this. Just my opinion. I respect all of yours as well. thank you

amneris, I don't think Broadway needs a revival of Grease either but until I'm a producer with deep pockets, I don't have a say in what is or what is not revived. :) The fact that the two leads are being cast in this way may not be an absolute good thing but, in my opinion, most of the people who auditioned for this, and were serious contenders, were probably the same ones who would have auditioned for those roles if it had been an open call done in the usual way. Just as it was for all those cast in the myriad of other roles in the show.
Yes, it's true that probably tons of people will watch this show every Sunday night who are not knowledgeable theatre fans, and who may never attend live shows, but it's also possible that it will prompt many people to actually buy tickets to this, or another, show, and that is always a good thing. Promoting theatre is something that all who love live theatre should do, regardless if it's one of your favorite shows or not.
The methods used in the course of auditions, to make it good entertainment for the tv audience, are questionable, without a doubt. However, any person who auditioned and didn't expect that has, quite frankly, been living under a rock for the past however many years this type of show has been on tv. I'm not saying it's right but it certainly shouldn't be unexpected. I have no intentions of seeing this show. Saw it last with Lucy Lawless as Rizzo, how can you beat that?! :)

It is bad enough this show is revived every 3 minutes but it is the height of craziness to buy tickets & have no idea what theater it is in& where you are sitting
Barnum was right

Posted: 1/5/07 at 8:04pmWow, has this ever happened before? Being able to sell tickets to show that doesn't even have a theater! I mean, you don't even know where you'll be going or where you're going to sit. I guess the figure we don't care which seat we're in or what theatre we're going to.
#20re: Tickets to Broadway Revival of Grease Go On Sale Jan. 7
Posted: 1/5/07 at 8:26pmI believe many people buy tickets to shows regardless of who is in the cast, that applies not only to Broadway shows though to any show

I'm curious about the seating plan too... do you just buy a ticket in a specific zone and then get them assigned randomly?
And still... how many tickets can they sell if they don't know the capacity of the theater? This is very strange, sounds like a logistical nightmare.

I assume that they already have an idea which theatre they are going into, and might announce it in the coming weeks, so they are selling seats for a specific theatre. I dont really know, though
It is rather strange...
