Tim Gunn left "It's Only A Play" at intermission. Was the show that bad?

I haven't seen it but even if it was bad, I'm surprised that he would admit that, especially with the people involved.
It's awkward that he admitted leaving at intermission and that the answer mentioned all those actors and the playwright by name specifically.

It seems mean spirited considering the question was "What was the last performance you attended?" If the interviewer followed up, he could of said something like "I wasn't a fan" or "It didn't appeal to me." But to say that he left at intermission is saying it wasn't worth finishing.

I watched Bob Hope leave City of Angels at intermission.
There are a million reasons someone might leave at intermission besides "the show was that bad".

I can say without a doubt that "It's Only a Play" was one of the biggest disappointments of my theater-going experiences. I have a personal aversion to leaving anything early that I've paid for in the hopes that it can get better, but that show just got steadily worse.
I saw Whoopi leave South Pacific at intermission.
I guess they didn't make it work.

"Was the show that bad?"
Yes.
Can't say I blame the man for leaving.
He displays good taste in both plays and clothes.

Tim Gunn is a huge deal in the fashion industry and, by association, pop culture. No one is saying his opinion should "matter," but can't the same be asked about whatever you post? Why should your opinion matter?

Thanks for the response. PS: I did not say my opinion matters just curious who Tim Gunn is and why this thread was created about him That's all. Wow some posters in the threads just assume what is even not stated, just so rude!!! Now that's my opinion! And I don't care what you think of it Liza somebody!

I wasn't a huge fan either, but I paid for the ticket so I stuck it out.
Sidenote, I actually met Tim Gunn at a charity event where he was the guest speaker and found him to be incredibly gracious and kind.
Maybe he was tired or not feeling well. I loved it and I wish I could have sat in his seat for the second act again. I just adore Nathan Lane.

DAME, Whoopi actually apologized the next day on The View for it, claiming she was simply exhausted and would return in a couple of weeks to finish the show. She specifically apologized to the cast because "I know y'all probably noticed I had left." I don't know if it was actually her being tired or if she didn't enjoy it (or if she actually went back), but I thought that was gracious of her.

I'm assuming that since he said he left at intermission that means he didn't like the show. He makes a specific point of saying he left early, not just naming the show he saw. I imagine this interview was done by email. They emailed the questions, and he wrote responses. He didn't have to mention that he left early. There was no pressure on him to give an opinion of the show.
Who the heck CARES!? This is clearly representative of postings that are all about trivial impulse from someone alone with no one to talk to with no ability to quiet their own inner chatter that with just a little time would quiet. Please people. Write any future posts & then sleep on it. If you think it still has value the next day THEN go for it...& to think that thousands of us actually read this & consider it worthy of any thought?

Oh, good lord. We'd never have any new posts if people actually THOUGHT about it. If it doesn't interest you, don't open the thread!
A few weeks ago I was at a new revival and I ran into some friends who are Tony voters before the show, chatted with them at their seats, and then when I turned back a few times during the second act, they were long gone.
He's as cranky as Stephen Sondheim, although not nearly as old.

He comes off better and more nuanced in the NYT profile of his this past Sunday.

I started the thread to find out 1) why someone famous would admit to leaving at intermission without further explanation (sick, bored, etc) and 2) was the play that awful?
People act like leaving at intermission is the equivalent of murdering someone. If he didn't like the show and wanted to be somewhere else, then so be it.
