Nothing objective about it. No prizes for winning. Why do we care? It's just the click bait they are trained to employ in the desperate hope it'll keep them afloat a bit longer."
Part of it click-bait, sure- that's how internet media has progressed. But rankings lists have been around for decades and are all just as objective and arbitrary as this one. For people unfamiliar with the things being ranked, it's a good introduction to the topic and the essentials. For people who are familiar, it can be a nice reminder of things you've forgotten and a way to inspire giving something another look or looking at things from another perspective. Reading opinions is never a bad thing.

I think Hogan's mystification stems not from the fact that the list exists and is sparking discussion, but from comments like "I'm thrilled to see such-and-such on the list," as if it matters. As if the recordings are winning some kind of prestigious award or something.

I would be one of the people who excluded jukebox musicals, taking off the list Beautiful & Jersey Boys. Also, I would remove Spring Awakening. I love the score but the recording doesn't capture the excitement of it at all. It is just too sedate for what we heard in the theatre. In their stead, I would place Taboo, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Kinky Boots. All of those work to relive the theatrical experience and are still played often on my mp3 player.

correct. I understand why 2 otherwise relatively intelligent people made the list instead of spending the same amount of time crafting some insightful analysis, but its the reaction of some here that flabbergasts me.

It's a subjective list, of course, and really it's just an excuse for some Hamilton clickbait, but I am glad they chose some underrated ones, like Women on the Verge, Xanadu, Passing Strange and The Wild Party.
Frankly, I'm just amazed we've had so many of these great shows in just the last 15-16 years. That's something to cheer.

Lists sometimes end up generating interest in a particular show. If I like and agree with 9/10 items and am unfamiliar with the last one, I trust the "curator's" opinion enough to try out the 10th.
Anyway, anyone who thinks Fun Home is not a great album should really listen to it again. It's a pretty good representation of the show, and the sound balance is better than several recent cast recordings we have had.
