"People keep conveniently forgetting that Broadway and especially this board, have nothing to do with what sentiments the actual movers and shakers have about certain actors".
So true fosterchild.
Go to youtube.com and search for "Tina Maddigan". You can watch the hilarious "Mamma Mia Original Broadway Cast - Skit" where Tina is the Opera Lady. I really think she can do this role. Again, if Kate can do it, Tina can and she would be fabulous with Ana.
Laura as Mary Poppins? Tina would make a great Mary Poppins or Belle in Beauty and The Beast. She has the personality and charm as well. At least she wouldn't scare the children. Haha
Tina has a very good fan base. She's been all over the Broadway major media outlets lately with Mamma Mia!'s 5th anniversary on Broadway. She's hosting the special edition DVD with Joe Machota. You all forget, Mamma Mia! is a huge success worldwide and she originated the role of Sophie in the Toronto production, the 1st National Tour and on Broadway. Plus, she did an outstanding job filling in for Laura for weeks, a show that has dozens of fans. I highly doubt the only fan mail Tina receives is from her 10 fans on this board as the previous poster claims she only has.
"Dozens of fans" Phantom, really? Than everyone with a myspace page is "famous". And "all over the media" starts and stops with Broadway.com and Bww, not exactly Nightline, know what I mean? I'm all for Broadway people crossing over, I've been "campaining" for people like Sara Ramirez and Orfeh forever (the former not doing too badly for herself, lately) but there has to be some perspective to it all. And it most likely will never happen JUST because we, this tiny online community, love the person here. That's all I'm saying Phanty, that and the fact that tina is all wrong IMO, for Glinda.
For clarification, I updated my post to say "She's been all over the Broadway major media outlets lately..." Yes, I'm referring to broadwayworld.com, broadway.com, playbill.com and broadwaybeat.com. And, people all over the globe are buying the Mamma Mia! 5th anniversary CD/DVD. That's very good press.
And no, people with hundreds of myspace.com friends are just plain ridiculous.
Finally, I'd much rather see Tina originate a role, but I think she would be a damn good replacement. Tina is a leading lady, there's no disputing that!
Ah yes, the good old Broadway "stars" vs. real "stars" debate and now we have internet "stars" to add to the fray(bww/myspace/friendster) not to be confused with the oldest debate of them all, the "Is Deborah Cox a superstar" fight, not to be confused with the "who should be cast in Wicked" and "what role should Sutton foster play next" sagas while honorable mentions go to the "Wedding Singer appreciation thread" and the all time classic, "my next door neighbors' housekeeper knows for a fact that so and so is DEFINITELY going to be the next" (enter coveted show/role here).
I wouldn't say Kate Reidners is a Mover or Shaker wither...she did Gypsy and Good Vibrations!
Phantom, I don't get what you mean "If Kate can do it, Tina can..." Kate most certainly wasn't great as Glinda, but one thing she DID have was the vocal chops to pull off the role, which is what Tina is lacking. Just because she can hit a few high notes in a skit like the one on YouTube (which I've seen) doesn't mean she can sing Schwartz's score eight times a week.'
Mama Mia! is a big hit, but that doesn't mean any one in it is well known in the community because of that. Everyone that's come and gone outside the OBC (with the exception of Carolee) are still relatively unknown, and just because Tina has been getting publicity for the show lately doesn't mean her stock has risen any higher.
And Maddigan as Mary Poppins.. are you kidding? SHE ISN'T A SOPRANO. For god sakes, get the picture. Well she's blonde so let's see... she can be Elle in Legally Blonde, and Cassie in A Chorus Line, and Betty Schaefer in Sunset Boulevard, and what the heck, King Arthur in Spamalot and Celie in The Color Purple! Give me a break..
As wonderful as I think Tina is, I am willing to bet money her next project is a return run as Sophie in Mama Mia!.

I just watched that skit, and she wasn't that impressive.
Laura Benanti as Elphaba? That is about the most off casting I've ever seen here, and that's saying something.

I have no interest in most of the topics repeatedly mentioned on this thread and certainly think it's mostly nonsense but it was worth the read just to see Al's insanely funny post which should have cahnged the tone but quite unfortunatley, did not. Thanks for the only worthwhile chuckle Al and how right you are.

We should be so lucky!
One more thing. Why does Mary Poppins have to be a Soprano?
Ummm... because that's the way the role was written? Have you not heard the score?
Well, that's funny because I heard they were interested in Miss Maddigan.
Well I don't know where you 'heard' that (probably from the little bird on your window,) but I seriously doubt it. That score is completely out of her range. She isn't even right for it acting wise. Mary is supposed to be charismatic but a bit more reserved and poised, where as Maddigan screams bubbly and cute.
I'm certainly not saying that Tina is right for every leading female role (especially the blonde ones!). I'm saying that she's a very talented leading lady who happens to be "the girl next door" type. I can't wait for you to tell me why she wouldn't be a good Ariel in The Little Mermaid. Are her shoulders too broad? HA!
I could see Maddigan as Ariel. My point is that you seem to think she IS right for every role just because it's a leading female character.
Please explain to me your opinion on her being right for Mary Poppins if you don't know Mary is a soprano and you say yourself Tina is a 'girl next door type' when Mary is supposed to be the complete opposite. Same goes for your endorsement of her as Glinda when that too is a high soprano role.
Quite simply put, it's called acting.
And it wouldn't be the first time a role's been adjusted, now would it?

Right, but just because you haven't seen that she CAN do it, doesn't mean that she CAN'T, either. It simply means that so far she hasn't. I think that while the skit does not necessarily prove that Tina could handle the role, it certainly does not disprove it either.
Basically, both of your arguments are invalid (both for and against her in the role.)
