I like using TodayTix because they let you buy cancellation coverage which I have used more than once. What I don’t like is they tend to have limited seats available to choose from. When I look ahead at a show Telecharge will show me a ton of available seats where as TodayTix will show me maybe only a dozen. Why is that? Also the pricing seems to change at random. I grabbed Chess tickets for a great price. Not a special or sale and when I went back in a few minute later seats next to me were suddenly available (they were not available minutes earlier) and they were over $100 more seat. Both were center stage seats. So weird. Would love some insight.

If you're buying a solo ticket, TodayTix operates on the policy that you can't leave single seats stranded, so if there are two seats together they just won't show it if you're only looking to buy one ticket (since that would leave the second seat as a single seat). The same principle applies for if you're buying two seats and there are three seats together, etc.
Otherwise, I think TodayTix has some tension butting up against the usual box office players, and there's not always an open communication between them. I'm not sure what kind of partnership they have now, but my guess is they simply don't get all the data from the primary ticketers and/or change their own seating/pricing at will.

Isn't it possible that productions only release select seats to specific auxiliary ticket sellers like TodayTix, particularly if discounts are involved? Similar to how a discount code might only be listed at Playbill or BroadwayBox, but not both.

Some productions might do that, but many/most I’ve seen are directly linked their respective Telecharge/BroadwayDirect/ATG map and so you have carte Blanche to pick wherever you want.
Also, I haven’t seen the “solo seat” block come up in a VERY long time - although I am a Gold member so maybe an exception is part of my perks?

I just checked and at least for Hell's Kitchen, it definitely changed availability based on whether I chose 1 or 2 tickets. I'm a silver member, so perhaps it's waived for gold.

TodayTix certainly updates the availability based on requested quantity of tickets, but I haven’t run into the “block” where I’m not allowed to buy a single seat from a pair that leaves a solo open seat for sale. I believe that part has changed.
TodayTix doesn’t offer much of a discount anymore, but I usually save about $10 because of my gold status. I find it mostly convenient as a gift card idea for family/friends (then send a “thank you” photo from whatever show I end up seeing). I like using them primarily for their flexibility in the event I can’t attend and the ease of refund if someone is out or the show cancels. When I couldn’t see Ragtime, I was able to let them try reselling my tickets and got all of the money back as credit once they sold. So nice.

I haven't had that problem arise in New York, but I was trying to get a solo ticket for Hadestown in London a few weeks ago and it wouldn't let me leave a single seat when blocks of two were showing up, even though I had 1 ticket in the search. So like any good ticket buyer, I went to the Nimax website, put the one I didn't want in my basket there, and then bought the one I wanted on TodayTix.
