Tommy Tune & Charles Honi Coles MY ONE AND ONLY

I saw MY ONE AND ONLY on a New Year's Eve at the St. James and what a joyous show to see the New Year in. In addition to enjoying Tommy Tune and Honi Coles, Twiggy was a pleasant surprise, acting and singing better than I thought her capable of. And Gerswin is always a pleasure; it is almost impossible to destroy the impact of a Gershwin tune. Witness the terrific CRAZY FOR YOU in the early 1990's. Now there is a show I would love to see revived.

I enjoyed the entire show, and was also quite surprised at Twiggy who really bowled me over. Seeing Tommy and Twiggy dancing in the shallow water was also such fun. I'm so happy I was able to see the entire original cast.

TWIGGY and TOMMY TUNE - S'WONDERFUL (1983) live
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

I loved this show! The first time I saw it, Twiggy was out. Her understudy, Stephanie Ely was excellent.

Yes, this was by far the best Broadway show I have ever seen in my entire life. I was 13 years old when I first saw it (I ended up seeing it 13 times!) and I loved it so much that I started a fan club for Tommy Tune. He invited me to meet him backstage and he was so nice (and smelled great). This show should be revived, but it will never be the same without this magical cast.

Mimi, I have always wondered why this show was never revived. I thought the choreography was very inventive. Gotta love the tap routine in the water.

Dottie, that routine in the water was sheer heaven. Just beautiful. It was simple, with no spectacle-level effects needed to beef it up. It just relied on the gorgeous Gershwin music and the genius that is Tommy Tune.

I also loved the mirror image of the dancers (not sure if it was the opening number or closing number) where the women were dancing in front of slats (scrim), which then rose, and showed the men doing the same thing.

I'm embarrassed to say that I don't remember that part, Dottie.

MrMidwest, thank you for that YouTube link. Boy, that certainly brought back very nice memories.

And I have to agree with you guys. Seeing MY ONE AND ONLY on Broadway still remains one of the the most delightful evenings I have ever spent in the theatre. Incredible dancing and creativity.

morosco, thanks for the reminder!

Yeah, this show was definitely the best. It's such a shame Tommy Tune isn't on Broadway again.

That portion was just so vivid in my memory considering it was over 25 years ago!! That was also when the Tony Awards aired complete numbers.

this show tried out in Boston and was horrible...reviews were horrible audience were hard on it...then it hit broadway and it was amazing...TT worked every kink out of it and let others help until it became the perfect broadway show ...I loved it I saw Grand Hotel in Boston and it again was in try outs and it wasnt very good..but I said to a friend ..by the time it gets to NYC it will be wonderful and it was...TT is the man when it comes to directing and he is a really sweet man also

I saw My One And Only pre-Broadway at the Colonial in Boston. It was a pointless mess. Tommy Tune apologized after the curtain. I remember thinking how much better it would have been if they'd written and choreographed and directed the show before they came to Boston to perform it.
