re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

Gothampc---Fosse's last original show was "Big Deal," and it received mixed to bad reviews and only lasted a couple of months on Broadway.

Should we just bury him as "mediocre" and forget everything else he ever did?

Ditto with Sondheim?

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

Tommy Tune is a genius! He directed, co-choreographed, re-wrote and starred in MY ONE AND ONLY as well and that was a huge hit. I'm sure that he will give this show what it needs to be the best that it can be,

I'm thrilled Tune is coming back with a new project. And let's not forget his greatest skill is that of script doctor. He's helped a lot of shows turn around (and very rairly has received any official credit).

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

I'm kinda sad that a lot of people don't understand Tommy's impact on Broadway and theatre in general over the past (nearly) 40 years.

He's one of our "living treasures," right up there with Fosse, Bennett and Prince.

I realize it!!

The man is extemely talented. And he's one, like Cy Coleman, that rarely gets talked about on these boards.

I wanna see Tommy Tune and Christina Applegate in a show together... they could do a lamp post ballet...

And if there's one voice of protest -
And then two voices protest -
And then three voices protest -
And then four!

And then more voices protest -
More and more voices protest -
'Till there's one voice of protest
That's a roar!

We shall make you mend your ways -
'Till the world sees better days -
And we don't have to protest anymore!

if he's smart Tune really doesn't have that much work to do. just go back to the script as it was in london and make "Like Animals" the act one finale. the script was fine just the way it was. whoever they brought in to revise the script for American audiences only damaged it. if you look at the song list for the tour compared to the list on the OLCR it's just one inferior change after another...

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

I'm going to have to disagree with Gotham (big surprise...lol) that you're only as good as your last show. To me, Broadway is a place where artists who have made significant contributions to the theatre world are held in high esteem, whether the last show they did was a success or not. Mr. Tune is, if nothing else, a multiple Tony winner and legend. Did we give up on Elaine after Goldilocks? Betty after Carrie? Angela after Anyone Can Whistle? Should we give up on Terrence after Lennon? Hardly...

PS-- Jovie, that avatar is nice....

Well, all I know is its not coming to Huntsville, AL in November, so I'm over it. Unless it reschedules ? Maybe ?

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

I repeat, I am just glad to see Tune back on the boards. He's been away too long. His style of choreography is probably not even known to the younger crowd.

The only time he's ever dissapointed me was in his "Footnotes" book. I would have preferred a chapter's worth of "how I did that" regarding his shows, not his sexual exploits.

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

The point here is that Tune is directing, choreographing and starring. Fosse, Bennett and Stritch never did that. It's next to impossible to do it all.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

I think it is great that this show is going to get another shot! I'm sorry that original cast members may be replaced, but if Mr. Tune makes it work, the show will provide many, many, jobs that have already been lost and hopefully a few hours of enjoyment to all that see it. I'm sorry, but I can't see how this is a bad thing. Good luck, Tommy! If anyone can do it, you can!

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

9 Tony Awards, Gotham... NINE...like the show...

How about Joe Mantello? Harvey Fierstein? Elaine May? Barbra? Stro? Do I really have to make this list? I know there's no convincing you otherwise, but maybe everyone else can see that some can do it all, so to speak...at least in more than one Tony category...

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

Yes, and the amazing thing is that he is a MULTIPLE Tony award winner for all three of his Broadway talents: acting, directing and choreographing.

I don't think anyone else, alive or dead, can lay claim to that.

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

I still don't understand the negativity here....here is someone with a history of work on Broadway....now working on Broadway show in trouble. This is not some TV star coming in and taking over. This is not some first time director coming in to fix a show.

This is the person that SHOULD be brought in to doctor a show. Someone who KNOWS the work. What's the problem?

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

the problem is they never should have altered the script for the tour. then they wouldn't be in this mess in the first place...
#46

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

I don't have any problem with Tune being on to doctor and re-choreograph a show. He's brilliantly talented in that area.

It's his being the new star of the show that gives me pause.

His teeth, hair and face has been so heavily worked on and his skin is so pulled and artifically tan that he now looks like a caramel-covered corpse.

Only Michael Jackson has a more disturbing visage.

And we all know that the Tony Award always goes to the most talented person.

re: Tommy Tune takes over 'Dolittle'

songplugger, I have noticed the caramel tan thing going for a couple of years now...it's a bit much, I agree.

That said..I have no problem with him acting in the show.

Amen, lildogs. Yes, a Tony slip-up or two is arguable.

But this would be like accidentally stabbing someone with a knife nine times (i.e., "Chicago").
