Not appropriate...but cute

WTF is not appropriate about it? Jesus Christ Superstar. You know what, water really DOES melt certain people. SPLASH!
I thought it was tres clever, Namo. And since I was berated for not being "witty as you are" (in another post) I will strive for it in the future. Keep 'em coming!
Oh Namo...what does one do without your witty comments?

Just one more perspective - For one glorious moment, hundreds of people bonded together and shared an exhilerating, euphoric emotional connection with two women who they accepted as the characters they were playing, but also knew who they were, what the situation was and what was going on. Believe it or not, there are people who can have all those awareneses going all at the same time. They weren't sitting at home in their underwear on the couch watching the latest installment of reality show number 83, and they weren't gulping down the 14th cocktail of the evening at the local watering hole wondering why, oh why were they alone again. They were sitting in a theatre, surrounded by invigorated, excited and enthralled participants in shared expression of the NOW. For some time to come, they will remember having that experience and share it with those who were unfortunate enough not to have been there. We who were not can spend our time judging them for the vulgarity they have stooped to - but we will only have the bitter aftertaste of cynicism and disillusionment to savor for as long as we wish to keep it. I, for one, say BRAVA - and may you continue to enjoy the fruits of your labor - and THANK YOU for the immense joy you are giving to the thousands of lucky people you connect with every week.

May you never run out of tears, Namo - they are a release valve of the heart - and at least this is SOME indication that you have one.
that was a great post, dgrant ("just one more perspective..."). the reason that i love theater so much more than t.v. is the fact that anything can happen. perhaps its because im a sucker for such live theatrical moments...or maybe it is the presence of that organ in my chest that you describe, but i wish i could have been there.
sorry if ive made you cry a river by now, namo. tissue?

It's great that you are standing up for the art of live theatre-there is no cause greater (unless you're on the off-topic board). I do think though, that what people are upset about, is that last night wasn't the first time that the ladies were joking around in the middle of a scene (day-after Tonys or not). I appreciate that it was a wonderful unifing experience, but when it happens on such a constant basis, one has to think of it as unprofessional that these people are getting paid great sums of money to stay in character. And the people in the audience are paying to see the show and be told a story. These breaks in character that are happening so often are distracting from the story and the story-telling. Something happened when I saw the show and I was kind of annoyed-I really enjoyed the show overall, but I wasn't paying to see an inside joke or be a part of some special experience-I just wanted to be told the story as effectively and clearly as they could tell it.
HUSSY!
Dawg, have you no heart,no soul, no enjoyment for the unexpected? We need to lighten you up a bit!!!
Unfortunately the 1,700 people in the theatre that night
disagree with you.
But there is always one.....
i don't mind the unexpected... it's when the unexpected becomes part of the show that annoys me... Patti LuPone's unexpected gaffes in Can Can were funny, precisely because they were unexpected... But i would have been annoyed had they become part of the show...
By the way, for those of you who saw the other winning shows and actors during their first post-Tony performance, were there any on-stage ad-libbed congrats?

joeyjoe and dawg...that my point exactly. A one time occurrence is one thing, but the impression one gets from reading these posts is that it has become pretty near standard operating procedure. The hard core Wicked fans seem to love it because it reinforces the illusion that they are 'insiders' and that Idina and Kristen are their friends. The people who are in attendence for their one and only visit to the show will assume that they've seen a one time faux paux, and won't pay it much mind and might even be amused by it. So maybe there really *is* no harm done. It's from the perspective of seeing the big picture, that it bothers me. I see it as contributing to the erosion of professional standards in theater. And that makes me sad. But you know what? I've spent my hundred bucks seeing Wicked once and I enjoyed myself. I even own the CD. I have no problem with Idina having won the Tony. But I'll never go back for a return visit, precisely because of the cavalier attitude that has developed about the responsibility of actors at the top, professionally telling the story they are there to tell. One has the right to expect to see the story unfold without being reminded that one is watching Idina or Kristen, the actress, playing the role. It just doesn't sit well with me, and never will.
For those of you who love to see these special little breaks of character, I say fine, enjoy yourselves. But I still feel it's my right to voice dissatisfaction with what I find to be a troubling trend.
iflit, i'll sign that petition!

I think it would be great if there were a separate thread about this phenomenon in which people took a fearless look at themselves and their perceptions of themselves vis a vis the artists and shows they find themselves devoted to. There is nothing wrong with any of it, but I think it's really worth examining it. And finding out ways in which it's helpful in a person's life and ways in which it can be exploited for the gain (mostly financial) of others. (cf The Ozdust Boutique)
