I haven't seen 9-to-5 (nor do I plan to; not out of malice, I just have no desire), so I can't speak for the size of the parts.
I imagine the parts are of equal size and weight; if the 3 have been nominated in the same category before (Drama Desks), there's no reason why they should be separated for the Tonys.
While it wouldn't surprise me, I just think it would be stupid if the roles are all of equal size.
It would be like if the GUYS AND DOLLS producers intend Nathan and Adelaide into lead and Sky and Sarah into featured because 2 are celebrities and 2 aren't. The four of them are above the title; equal weight on all the parts; the '92 revival had all 4 as lead. (Incidentally, the original production's awards had Alda as lead and Bigley as featured).
In terms of 9-to-5, there's a variety of thinking. Yes, putting 1 into lead and 2 into featured would potentially create more winners, but 3 in the same category out of 5 nominees are better odds.
That said, it doesn't mater who is put into where; the award is Alice Ripley's to lose. It's like people projecting Audra McDonald to win in the same year as Christine Ebersole.
