Playbill.com has learned that the Tony Awards Administration Committee will assemble for the fifth and final time during the 2008-2009 theatre season on May 1.
A spokesperson for the Tony Awards told Playbill.com that the Administration Committee is currently scheduled to meet May 1 at 10 AM to discuss the shows that have opened on Broadway since the group last assembled on April 2.

How are they going to have time to do the nominations when eligibility won't even be determined until four days before?
They obviously already know who's going to be nominated. I think it's just a matter of determining who's placed where.

Right, but the voters can't complete their ballots until they know the category placement.
I think the main game-changers here are going to be Will Swenson, Matt Cavenaugh and Josefina Scaglione, Stephanie J. Block and Megan Hilty, and the casts of The Norman Conquests and Joe Turner's Come and Gone.
For those who know the show, is J. Robert Spencer sure to be in Leading Actor?
Yes, J. Robert Spencer is above the title.

That's plenty of time. The nominations committee is small, right? Like 25 people...they all sit in a room and vote in one session, the votes are tabulated, presto, they have their nominees.
After that, it doesn't take long to throw together the press kits or do the website. The Oscars does that all one night before the nominations announcement.

I feel like people on the nomination committee already know who they are going to be voting for, they are just waiting to see what category they end up in. There are only a couple of shows they are waiting to rule on yes? I know West Side Story, 9 to 5 are two they havent ruled on yet but what are the others? There cant be that many
Hair....they'll have to determine where to put Gavin and Will.
I know where I would put Gavin.
Why do people continue to wonder about Scaglione's category?
Carol Lawrence and Josie De Guzman were nominated at Supporting, and the committee won't change that.

They could push for lead if they didnt want to put Scaglione and Olivo in the same category. Best Featured Actress is going to be one full and wild card-ish category
So that would leave another opening in the Lead Actress category:
Allison
Stephanie
Megan
Alice
Sutton?
I think they may be swayed PJ.
I've asked before. has the commitee ever turned down a Producer's request?

I agree with PJ. The odds of them changing the category the role of Maria is nominated in after two previous nominations are slim. Also, I would assume that West Side Story, if there were any petitions to discuss, would have been part of the April 2 meeting. I believe producers have two weeks after opening to submit petitions, and I can't imagine that the producers of WSS would have waited until the very last minute (i.e. the afternoon after that morning's meeting) to submit any petitions they may have wanted to put in.

Does anyone know where the committee is meeting, or is that a ~top secret~ thing?
Is it not the Polish Tea Room?
Why would you possibly care where they're meeting? It's the same conference room in the same building they always meet in.
I always picture the Death Star conference room from A New Hope.

I'm sorry, scott. I didn't realize that simple curiousity was banned from this board.
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude. I just didn't understand what the benefit of knowing where they're meeting would be. I honestly don't know whether or not it's TOP SECRET, but... well, again, not to be rude, but why do you care?
I don't see how Swenson is Lead. To me, there's no question that Creel is Lead and Swenson is Featured.
And even though Hilty and/or Block being pushed to Featured would give them more of a chance to win, I kinda hope that all three ladies get nominated for Lead. They are certainly all giving lead performances and have equal heavy-lifting.
I've asked before. has the commitee ever turned down a Producer's request?
A few years ago, for the revival of GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, all seven cast members were above the title. The producers requested that five of them be moved to Featured, with Alan Alda and Liev Schreiber remaining in Leading. The committee denied the full request, and placed all seven men in Featured. The producers appealed, but lost. All seven men were counted as Featured. Three were nominated, and one (Schreiber) won.
additionally, we don't always know what 'requests' are made. The committee only reports what has been decided and then puts everything else under: All other decisions are consistant with the ground rules. (Well, something like that.)

For some reason I see 9 to 5 trying to petition Block into the Lead category and Hilty in the Featured Category but honestly, I have no idea how they will rule on the 9 to 5 ladies, its kind of a tricky situation

The meetings are generally held at the Edison Cafe. At least, that's where the actual nominations are decided upon.
It's not top secret; it IS common knowledge.
