Tony Award Eligibility - Acting#25

henrikegerman - I am basing it on the fact that her name is below the credits. However, you have a valid point, so I've moved her into the Leading category. I realize that it's difficult to predict these categories, but I wanted to make this list partly to have a better understanding of how the committee operates. I'm learning a lot from this thread! When the committee meets again to determine the eligibility of the remaining shows, I'm positive changes will be made to it.

MNC77 - Thanks for your suggestions! I've added them to the list.

I updated this list based on the rulings today by the Tony Committee. Hope I didn't forget anyone!

Is the supporting cast of Inishmaan missing from the original post?

I'd add Cass Morgan to the potential Supporting Actress catagory for Bridges.

Can someone explain the eligibility that would have Andy Karl NOT nominated as a leading actor - he was in pretty much every scene of Rocky. I feel like that was a very obvious ruling but it says he was "elevated" implying he was only up for featured until now - what am I missing. Thanks!!

Category placement is initially determined by billing on opening night. If an actor is billed above the title they are considered leading and if they are not they are considered featured. The producers can then petition to have an actor moved into a different category, which the nominating committee will then either grant or deny. The committee also has the power to make a determination on their own with or without a petition if it's a clear cut case of an actor not being in the appropriate category based on the billing, though I'm not sure how often they actually exercise that power.

Thank you for the clarification! One further point - are there particular reasons or rules for determining billing by the producers on opening night? Again, the in the Rocky case, is it just simply that they wanted "Rocky" to be the first thing / name people see? Because it seems in no way that Andy Karl is simply "featured". Thanks again!

One reason can be to emphasize the title more, rather than the star power. Another is that if an actor is billed above the title and an understudy goes on for them, the producers are obligated to issue refunds or exchanges (before the show, of course). The reason for this is that having the actor above the title implies you are buying tickets to see that specific person rather than the show itself. So if you buy tickets for "Andy Karl in Rocky" and Andy Karl is out, they have to issue refunds. If you just by tickets for "Rocky", it doesn't matter who goes on.

madbrian - You are correct. I added Sarah Greene and Pat Shortt based on reviews, but I'm not familiar with the show, so if there is someone else missing, please do let me know!

Michael Bennett - Thank you! I added both Cass Morgan and Whitney Bashor.
