I was just gonna say, while I'm not as over-the-moon about BRIDGES' score as others on here, "One Second & a Million Miles" and "It All Fades Away" are the two songs that have literally been rolling around in my head for weeks since I saw it.
ROCKY's lyrics, after I gave them time to settle in my mind, actually have grown a little in stature (only a little!) for the reasoning that the characters themselves would not be articulate. Yes, "My Nose Ain't Broke" is an oft-ridiculous song in concept but the more I thought about it the more it made a certain amount of sense. I'm not saying the concept of writing inarticulate songs on purpose or the execution of said hypothetical concept is particularly brilliant, but I don't dock the score as much as I thought I would from what I heard going in because it works in the moment. And that counts for something.

It's a two horse race between After Midnight and Bullets over Broadway.
Beautiful may be a spoiler though!

"Any chance that Hedwig's score could be considered eligible?"
If Hedwig is going to be considered a revival, then no.

So, do I have this right?
If you compose incidental music taking up 0.01% of stage time in a play, you are eligible for best score.
But if you write a dozen new songs taking up less than 50% of the numbers in a musical with many new compositions, you are not eligible for best score.
Whereas someone who wrote only 6 new songs taking up exactly 50% of the numbers in a musical would be eligible for best score even though that would be only half the new compositions of the composer who wrote 12 new songs which take up less than.....
Oh, **** it, you know what I mean.

Posted: 4/10/14 at 3:32amDoes anybody know when the Tony nominating committee will meet to determine final eligibility for the season? This whole thread has me wondering if Aladdin will be eligible for score. It sounds like it's really about whether those songs written for the movie but not used until now will be considered "written for the stage."

This is the way the score question is phrased on the tony eligibility form;
Does the score for the Production contain only original music and lyrics written for this Production? If not, please approximate the percentage of material that is newly written for this Production and the percentage drawn from other sources:
Newly Written ______% Drawn from other Sources _______% N/A (No Score)_______
So it seems that trunk songs should be counted in the "drawn from other sources" category. BUT the definition of "newly written" is vague, and things like new lyrics over old melodies and dance breaks have counted as newly written. (I do not know if exit music, curtain call music, scene change music, and overtures also count as newly written. Those can be a significant percentage of the show's music. I would say that they aren't newly written, but I think there is a legitimate argument that they are newly written for the stage show.)

Posted: 4/10/14 at 3:24pmThe only way Aladdin will be eligible and be nominated is it the commitee wants to give Ashman 1 final chance at receiving a postumas Tony.

Most if not all of the stuff Ashman wrote is for the film so how could he qualify?
Someone posted above re incidental music. When J/H hit the scene, the anti Wildhorne craze had not really started. For some reason, Juan Darian A Carnival Mass was nominated over J/H. Say what you want but J/H has had productions all over the world. How many had Juan had?

I'm assuming Twelfth Night is eligible? Jeanine Tesori was nominated for her music for Twelfth Night in 1999. Of course, there was a dearth of original scores that year.
To my ear, Aladdin isn't at least 50% original. There were definitely more rewrites to Newsies than Aladdin, where they just lifted the songs from the movie and added the trunk songs to the show.

Posted: 4/11/14 at 12:28amBig Fish was one of my favorite scores of the season. However, it's one of those shows that sounds better on a cast recording than within the context of the show. And best score, as it should, considers the music within the context of the show. I also thoroughly enjoyed If/Then and Bridges' score. Rocky's score does not deserve to be nominated... Eye of the Tiger was the best song in the show, and that wasn't even written for the damn show.

I think Gentleman's Guide will get Best Score.
I think Bridges SHOULD get Best Score.
And assuming If/Then gets nominated, I think the last nom will go to… (drum roll)...
...First Date. The reviews for Rocky and Big Fish critically bludgeoned those scores. First Date may not be the second coming but I'm happy when Seth Rudetsky plays it on Sirius and I had a great time at the show.
