I also agree that Carole Shelley deserved a Tony nomination for her (featured) role in Wicked. Her performance was (and still is) a highlight of that show.

Ann Harada. I would have nominated her over Beth Fowler.
I'm also a little surprised that Becky Ann Baker didn't get a nomination. The featured actor in a musical was so crowded, I don't really think there were omissions...just too many eligible actors, especially with the whole cast of Assassins eligible in the featured category. I would have loved to have seen Rick Lyon or Jeffrey Carlson nominated, but I'm not sure who I would have left out. (Probably the guy from Fiddler...)
I'm glad Hunter Foster was nominated, though, as I feel he was egregiously overlooked for Urinetown! (Yeah, I know that shouldn't matter.) But he'll have even less of a chance up against Hugh than he would have had up against John Lithgow in 2002.

Thank you.
I mean...boo hoo...you're on Broadway!
Do I think that, artistically, some performances should have been nominated over others. Yes. Ann Harada's comes to mind. But still...no sympathy here.
Overall I think the nominees are great choices. My only suprise was: Douglas Sills (I liked him alot in LS). Maybe he'll get the fan choice award:) I think Hugh has it in the bag for best actor along with Jefferson Mays. I would looove to see Stephanie win but I don't forsee it. I was really suprised to see Anne Heche nominated also but I have yet to see 20th Century.

Is it possible that Oz got so many nominations (most of them slot-fillers, in my opinion, and one huge mistake in the featured actress category) because Hugh is hosting the awards? Hmmmm, I wonder . . . .
Callbackking- are you inferring that the Tony's are political? NEVER!!! LOL...

I wasn't that suprised that Liz McCartney of Taboo wasn't nominated. She had an amazing voice, when she sang Talk Amongst Yourselves, but her acting was just average. Of course, the book didn't give her as much to work with as Euan and Raul had. Aren't the Tonys for an actress in a musical supposed to award both singing and acting? Liz deserves an award for singing; I'm not so sure about the acting.

Well Liz' BIG SUE didn't have as much to work with book-wise as her co-stars did, but I think she still was far above average
OMG just think of her characters' pain in the scenes with Leigh...so sad...she made the most of that part

I agree with almost all of these omissions. But, I don't really feel the need for a lot of favorites to be "nominated" to validate one's own enjoyment.
The good news is that because this has been such a terrific season many excellent productions and performances had to be elimiated because of space.
So go out there and celebrate the excellence and variety of this season my seeing a show you havn't seen yet.
Anyway, that's just my opinion, I may be wrong.

Particularly tough to decide in Featured Actor in a Musical, many many good choices this year
Personal Opinions:
Ann Harada (Ave Q...absolutely shocked...how?)
Rick Lyon (Ave Q...but he might still get a special award in Nov for puppetry design or something)
Liz McCartney (Taboo)
Jen Cody (Taboo...knew she wouldn't be cuz she was in the chorus but I love her anyway )
Noah Racey (Never Gonna Dance)
Sriram Ganesan (Bombay Dreams)
Boy from Oz over Bombay Dreams? The only reason is because Boy from Oz has Hugh Jackman.
I'm very upset with this years Tony Awards. I was shocked to find the beloved Anne Harida did not recieve a nomination (Beth Fowler? Was she that good- I havent heard any talk over her) and that Little Shop of Horrors was left out of Best Revival. I loved LSOH! Well I guess it will be closing this summer since now its not even getting Tony airtime.
Nothing for Sly Fox kind of shocked me- I at least thought Renee (Some fun last name that I'm too lazy to look up) would at least get a nomination, but they got squat.
I am glad for Hunter Foster and very happy to see that Joel Grey and Carole Shelley were left out. I thought Joel Grey was pointless and that Carole Shelley was good, but its not an amazing role where you'd remember her or anything. Oh and a yey for Jennifer Westfeldt! I didnt think I'd see her in the nominations.
Overall, I'm a little annoyed. I dont think Boy from Oz with all the negative reviews I've read about the show should be up there in Best Musical. Two words: Hugh Jackman. Hes the powerhouse behind that show. I heard the book is crap and that that is also up for a nomination! Uggh. The Tonys play favorites. I'm done with my ranting, continue on...

I've only heard Stephanie on the recording, but I am amazed with her voice. Stephanie over Beth!

you rock on, Cosmik - you couldn't be more right about Jeff Calhoun being an omission, and, if I may, the worst thing about WICKED (which is really, after all is said and done, not that good) was the direction...
Jeff Calhoun
Jeffrey Carlson
Taboo for Best Musical
Mary Catherine Garrison
ANN HARADA
Joe Mantello, Wicked
Mitchell David Federan
JULIE HALSTON, Twentieth Century
I am definitely surprised that Ned Beatty was not nominated for CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. I suspect that if the Tony Committe had not ruled him eligible in the leading category (where the competition is esp. stiff) that he would most definitely have been nominated and WON in the Featured Actor/Play category.
I love the fabulous Beth Fowler. Loved her in Beauty and the Beast and on the Baby OBC album. Glad to see her nomination. She gives a beautiful, heartfelt performance in BFO and I esp. love her "Don't Cry Out Loud." No chance she'll win, but Brava for the nod.
Karen Ziemba in NEVER GONNA DANCE? Very shocked at that nod, although she did win the Outer Critics Awd. (I was shocked there as well). I think that her spot could have gone to either Carole Shelley in WICKED or Stephanie J. Block in BFO.
But the committe forgot to ask me.
does anyone else think that some of the points that are being made are ridiculous??
a) these will be the best tony awards in years because its actually a competition!
b) there are ALWAYS going to be people who should have been nominated and people you think shouldn't have, and that's fine - i'm all about people expessing their opinion - it would just be nice if some of the opinions made sense.
would have liked to see nominated:
ann harada
jeff calhoun
i was very pleased with the rest of the noms - thought they were decently decided. especially Michael McElroy who was brilliant in Big River. amazing that the show closed almost 8 months ago (!!) and its getting the credit it deserved!
I would have liked Michelle Ferdner and Christoper Fitzgerald to be nominated for supporting, but I figured they wouldn't be.
I am glad Boy From Oz got a best musical nod but saddened that LSOH was almost shut out. We saw it & loved it & I was sure it would get a best revival nod. Even Audrey 2 did not get a nod
Sad to say, it seems headed for the Broadway graveyard. As far as Oz, the producers may now seriously consider getting a replacement when Jackman leaves with the Best Nusical Nomination. Any guesses what number they will do ? My guess is the Tony's now open with " I Go To Rio". Big, splashy & an attention grabber.
We throughly enjoyed Oz & are going again when friends of ours from Pittsburgh come in with their 11 year old daughter
