I always thought it would be interesting to see how a tony race would be without the eventual winner. While two horse races wouldn't be that interesting, the races where there was a slam dunk winner (Lupone in 2008, Ebersole in 2006) would be very different categories. So tell me who would win in the race and who would get the final spot in the category. Lets Start With These 5......
Best Actress in a Musical 2008 Without Lupone
Best Musical 2009 Without Billy Elliot
Best Featured Actress in a Play Without Lansbury
Best Musical 2005 Without Spamalot
Best Actor in a Play 2007 Without Langella

Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Audra McDonald would have deservedly won for 110 IN THE SHADE in 2006 had it not been for Christine Ebersole.
I thought Donna Murphy gave a much better performance in Lovemusik, actually. I think she would've won. (and it was 2007)
I definitely think Loretta Ables Sayre would have won in 2008 had Laura Benanti not been nominated. And in Leading Actress, it probably would've been Kelli O'Hara, even though I thought Jenna Russell's performance was exponentially better.

I second Audra McDonald winning in 2007. I just saw her in 110 IN THE SHADE in Utah, and it was the most beautiful performance I've ever seen. That woman is one of the most talented performers to ever grace the stage, and I believe that 110 IN THE SHADE is her best work.
What about the 2001 Tony Awards without THE PRODUCERS?

Hallie Foote would have VERY DESERVEDLY won for her brilliant performance in Dividing the Estate...as she should have in the first place.

1995 without Sunset Boulevard
There would have been no Best Score or Book award.
Rebecca Luker would have won Best Actress by default (she was the only other nominee that year).
Smokey Joe's Cafe would have won Best Musical by default (again, the only other nominated musical).
Kind of puts this previous "weak" season into perspective.

Without Billy Elliot, it would've gone to Next to Normal, no questions asked.
Oh and for 2005, I think if Victoria Clarke hadn't won (although she completely deserved, a brilliant performance), Sherie Rene Scott would've taken it for DRS, unless the Tonys wanted to give Sutton more love. And Kelli O'Hara would've won Best Featured Actress if Sara Ramirez wasn't there. In fact, she should've won.
