I don't think it's the first Threepenny revival to cast Lucy Brown as a man. But there is every chance that this production could wipe the floor with all comers. Or it could suck. Or the Tony voters could think that Pajama Game would appeal more on the road and give them the Tony.
This is the first revival to feature Lucy Brown as man, on Broadway at least. Unless you count Bea Arthur...
Blargh, I totally forgot about Threepenny. What a good season for revivals.

Sweeney Todd will win and should win. Enough said.
I TOTALLY misread something on another site about the role being played by a man. Whoops.
HOW is it "enough said" when we don't even know how Threepenny will be? Are you people reading others' posts? Do you pay attention to how this all goes down?
I LOVED LOVED LOVED Sweeney, but you HAVE to admit that if Threepenny is a smash, it's gonna be a race.
I will be VERY surprised (and disappoited) if Sweeney doesn't win Best Revival. I guess we should wait until Threepenny Opera opens, but, really, I can't imagine a production more deserving of the award than this revival of "Sweeney Todd".
It IS interesting that the Best Revival contenders are all more deserving of awards than ANY of the Best Musical shows will be.

Hear, hear. That certainly says something.

Does anyone else think that it is silly to have a category in which all the prospective shows get nominated by default? What does the award then actually mean? I thought the Best Revival Category was fine back when NYC theatre was going through the revival craze but perhaps it is time to just stick them back into the Best Musical Category...especially when there are not even that many shows that really deserve that nomination in that category either. Perhaps I am just a bitter New York theatre goer that has been sadly dissassified with this years' musical offereings.

I say sweeney, but I really wouldn't mind if pajama game won, i mean, both shows have won numerous awards in the past, so, yeah, i don't know...
im just more concerned about what will win best musical!!!

I would love for The Threepenny Opera to be better than Sweeney Todd. There is definately room on Broadway for multiple breathtaking shows.
I just hope whichever show wins deserves it, and at this point I believe that Sweeney Todd is deserving.
I really believe that Sweeney will win. Hands down. But I guess we'll have to wait until Threepenny Opera to decide for sure. *makes I <3 Sweeney sign*.
I think even if THREEPENNY is a smash - the award will go to SWEENEY.
THREEPENNY is a limited engagement that can't transfer because of the cast. It would have to be just unbelievably remarkable - and I've seen nothing by the creative team that leads me to think its going to be another CABARET. Plus THREEPENNY is like STREETCAR and GYPSY - everybody thinks they know exactly how it should be done. I'm sure it will divide critics no matter what.
That said - I think some of the cast could really surprise - I wouldn't rule out a win by someone like Cumming or Lauper.
Sweeney Todd, Sweeney Todd. Is that even a question?

Yeah, Sweeny Todd. It's practically unanimous.
Yay- It's been fun to read all these. I really hope Sweeney pulls through, and am hoping they will extend the run and maybe even make a bid for a replacement cast after contracts end.
And yet, Henry IV won Best Revival over A Raisin in the Sun despite being a limited (and closed by Tony time) production.
And, I bet there are just as many Sweeney fans that feel a certain way about how it should be done.
Again--I LOVED Sweeney. At this moment, it is absolutely Sweeney's award. And, at this moment, I think Sweeney will sweep the musical categories. But, we have to let the season play out. You just never know.

Agreeing with the last statement,This is Sweeney's award to lose.Even if The Threepenny Opera would pull an upset, Patti and Michael WILL get the acting awards.
Unless Lauper and other Threepenny cast members are brilliant...yes, Sweeney deserves to SWEEP.
Like I said on a previous thread, I think Alan Cumming is going to really wow everyone as Macheath, and THEN we'll have a real race.

Sweeney, Sweeney, Sweeney...no doubt about it, baby!
Sorry to disabuse you, but, yes, there are possibly doubts! SCHMEH!
And this is likely going to be
THE BATTLE OF THE GOTH MUSICALS!
so is it just Sweeney, Pajama Game, and 3Penny in this category?
Yeah.
I have a feeling Cumming's performance will be very much like his performance in CABARET - and while it might be effective, I think literally every review will say something about how it's reminiscent of his CABARET performance, and that might be against him.
Obviously, I don't know how he's playing the role. I just have a feeling it will be very Emcee.
They're both terriffic. However, Pajama Game will wind up taking choreography and some other awards. Sweeney will take the revival award. At least, that's what I think.
