I was sitting at home watching Grey Gardens at the Tonys. Christine Ebersole screamed "STAUUUUUUUNCH!" and I thought to myself, "She's got that Tony."
Sammy Williams - Paul's Monologue. ACL.
OK, I didn't see him on Broadway. I saw an understudy in Los Angeles in 1977. Doesn't matter. Whomever did that monologue and did it well was going to win that award - nothing against Mr. Williams, who by all accounts did a masterful job. And everyone in the cast knew it.
When Christine sang Another Winter in a Summer town and that one line. My season ended a long time ago, she had the tony.
When Cynthia Nixon broke down in tears in RABBIT HOLE. I knew.
And as for Mary Louise Wilson, for me, she won for that last scene after Another Winter in a Summer Town where she...

That got her the Tony. I knew she'd win with that moment. When people started shouting about Orfeh and D'Amboise, I said, "Yes, but did they have THAT moment?" Orfeh certainly didn't and D'Amboise might have with The Cassie Dance, but she wasn't all that good. Wilson nailed the Tony with that cry of "Edie..." and the rest of the scene.
I couldn't agree more. Sure there are many songs that cinch a Tony for an actor, but this was the only cast I could think of with a specific moment. When I heard her call out "Edie" my heart broke.
I was sure Christine Ebersole had it once she held that magnifying glass up to her face!
Sara Ramirez won when she did that whole scatting bit during "Knights of the Round Table".
Victoria Clark won for that accent!!! I love it!!!
I loved Bernadette Peters' Rose's Turn, but I think Marissa deserved it.

Call me an idiot but I've "somehow" seen clips of Stephanie D'Abruzzo singing There's A Fine, Fine Line and I would have given her a Tony for that moment alone.
Okay, you are an idiot.
Some of these are really bizzare moments.
I agree with the Mary Louise "I can't open the can" moment.
