Mrs. Muller's scene in Doubt. After the scene was over, I said to myself, well, Mrs. Muller might not be the happiest woman alive, but at least in a few months she'll have a nice shiny Tony.
I totally agree with Anika Nani Rose and "I Hate the Bus." I was fortunate enough to see her one week before the tony's. I could not imagine that she would NOT win. Of course I also thought the same thing for Tonya Pinkins during Lot's Wife (who's voice was much better than it was for the tony performance).
Patti singing "A New Argentina"
Joanna Gleason singing "Moments in the Woods"
Shuler Hensley singing "Lonely Room"
Even though it was after the Tonys, I felt that Raul's "Being Alive" should have won him the award. Alas...

Also, after Gimme Gimme in TMM, I knew Sutton had it in the bag.
When Bebe Neuwirth sang "All That Jazz" I knew for sure that she was a lock
"Jerry Likes My Corn" and the scene following it. It was then I knew Mary-Louise Wilson was going to win her Tony.
I could not agree more! This number has everything humor, pathos, sarcasm, and both ladies nailed it. After I saw the show it was this number that stands out and made me realize they had to have Tony Awards.
I agree completely about Victoria Clark's Dividing Day. Such a beautiful, understated performance.

I just knew that Hadley Frasier would win the Tony the first time I heard him belt out "I'll be There" in The Pirate Queen.
I had the same feeling after I heard Heather Headley in Aida singing "Enchantment Passing Through."
If I were playing baseball, my .500 record would be great! Sadly, my Tony picking record is not so good.
Obviously Christine Ebersole did so much to win the Tony in GG-- so many things in Act I and Act II, but as a longtime Little Edie fan, I have to fall back on that line from Jerry Macguire, "You had me at Hello." I started crying the minute Ebersole came out in act 2 and said "Oh, Hi. Thank heaven you're here.
You look absolutely terrific, honestly."
And I third or fourth Jerry Likes My Corn for MLW.
Amy Spanger singing "Always True to You (In My Fashion)" in the KISS ME KATE revival.
Once she finished her six minute, show stopping, absolutely stellar performance, I just knew that Tony was hers.
Oddly, she was denied a nomination.
Ebersole won the Tony becuase of that 20-30 second moment of silence she had at the end of "Another Winter." Thats it.
She gave a wonderful performance in general, but had a wonderful handbook in the documentary on how to play the role. It was a beautiful impersonation..
the Tony belonged to Audra McDonald who re-created a role to astounding success. Her Tony Winning moment was the end of Old Maid.
I also think John Gallagher's monologue after "Blue Wind" was really well done, and in the hands of a less talented actor could have gone terribly wrong...
>Watching Raul Esparza on the Tonies singing Being Alive. I almost cried.<
Me too, but for different reasons.
Raul's Being Alive made me think the Tony should have been his. Also, yet another vote for Christine Ebersole's Another Winter.
brian stokes mitchell wrapping up "the impossible dream" from man of la mancha
as well as the "so in love" reprise in kiss me kate
I'm not knocking Ebersole's work in Act I. I love Act I of Grey Gardens. She was great in it. That work deserved a Tony too, but it was really the Act II stuff that got her a Tony. And as for Mary Louise Wilson, for me, she won for that last scene after Another Winter in a Summer Town where she...

...can't open the can and breaks down in her bed.
That got her the Tony. I knew she'd win with that moment. When people started shouting about Orfeh and D'Amboise, I said, "Yes, but did they have THAT moment?" Orfeh certainly didn't and D'Amboise might have with The Cassie Dance, but she wasn't all that good. Wilson nailed the Tony with that cry of "Edie..." and the rest of the scene.
Oh, and I might as well bid you all goodbye, as I am going on vacation tomorrow. If I can get my laptop to work, I'll make a surprise post!
Bye all! See you in a week!

I can't pinpoint a moment during I AM MY OWN WIFE. Jefferson Mays was absolutely astonishing.
Christine Ebersole - "Another Winter in a Summer Town" GREY GARDENS
I fell in love with David Hyde Pierce little by little as CURTAINS went on, but it was "A Tough Act To Follow" that made me think, "If I were a Tony voter, David would get my vote!"
Tyne Daly's "Rose's Turn".
Randy Graff's "You Can Always Count on Me"
Joanna Gleason's "Moments in the Woods"

I agree about John Gallagher in SA---front row seat enabled me to watch his facial expressions as he melted into the Mic, trying to hold onto his life...I knew then he would win.
Jennifer Holliday's singing of "And I Am Telling You..."
Michael Rupert's singing of the title tune "Sweet Charity" (in the '86 revival)
Mary Alice's confrontational scene with James Earl Jones in Fences (I actually went back again just to see that scene---it was jaw-dropping)
Betty Buckley singing "Memory" (it was electrifying live)
Harvey Fierstein's entire performances in Torch Song Trilogy and Hairspray (from the moment he was on stage until the moment he left, he was "Tony-winning")
Dick Latessa singing "You're Timeless To Me" with Harvey
Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury singing "Little Priest"
Chenoweth singing "That's My Philosophy"
Idina singing "Defying Gravity"
George Hearn singing "I Am What I Am"
Natalia Makarova dancing "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" in On Your Toes
Frances Ruffell singing On My Own
Tyne Daly singing and ACTING Rose's Turn

A little sour grapes, there? I don't deny Audra is a very talented actress nor do I deny she did a great job with her role. However, Christine Ebersole's performance transcended mere imitation or impersonation. She really channeled the characters she played, particularly Edie. The end of "Around the World" made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. The line between actor and role really was blurred in her remarkable performance and I think she fully deserved every accolade and award she received. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion and I to mine. Audra did have a framework for her interpretation as well-Inga Swenson's performance. (in truth no actor truly goes into a role a blank slate-they generally work from something, whether it's a novel, prior work of the playwright, prior performances, a film-the good ones do their homework.)
