Not a replacement, but an understudy: Elena Shaddow was mesmerizing and took my breathe away when I saw her on for Kelli OHara in Brides of Madison County. And admittedly she did the accent better than Kelli.
Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch in A Little Night Music is also a night of theatre I'll never forget.

Don't be sorry! I respect your opinion, even though we disagree.

Going back to Marin Mazzie in Next to Normal, I think she did a very good job, but part of the brilliance of Alice Ripley's performance is that with the way she sang, it all seemed barely in control, that at any point, it could all fall apart. I thought that really worked for the character, and I really missed that when seeing Mazzie. (I should add that I don't think Ripley was truly having trouble keeping things together; I think it was a brilliant acting choice.)
I'm pretty sure both Emma Stone in Cabaret and Bernadette Peters in A Little Night Music would have been strong contenders for the Tony if they had been part of the original cast.

I thought Michelle Williams was better than Emma Stone, yet I still think there was zero chance at either of them, or Sienna Miller for that matter, getting a Tony nomination. Especially that season.

Keene Curtis as Albin in La Cage was heartbreakingly good. Such a wonderful performance (I saw him on tour a week after the legendary, Tony winning Hearn on Bway, so easy to compare them, and he later closed the show in NY... ) and Elaine Paige in Sunset was spectacular with a capital S...

Unfortunately I only got to see Ripley in the part towards the very end of the tour, and although at times I guess her voice did suit the character, I think it was just too damaged to really do the score justice. For example, I distinctly remember on a Saturday night (before she'd end up missing two shows the next day - her attendance was so poor I ended up booking all 4 weekend performances to make sure I'd see her after already missing her on Broadway!) Ripley was absolutely struggling to sing "So Anyway", so much so that I thought she would actually just say the lyrics at the end instead of attempt to sing. I don't think I've ever seen such an uncomfortable vocal performance on stage before. It was a thrilling performance that I am so grateful to have seen, but she was not at her best here.
I absolutely loved Mazzie, so much so that I would have actually given her a 'replacement Tony' instead of Bernadette in Night Music (and everyone here knows I LOVE Bernadette and her performance). I'm bias because I didn't see Ripley at her peak and I had somewhat lower expectations regarding how Mazzie would handle the score given early reports and recordings of her performance (A LOT of head voice). But by the time I saw the show (also near the end of the run), Mazzie was a powerhouse - hitting every note and fiercely belting through the music where appropriate (e.g., Mountains; You Don't Know - I loved the screaming through that!). Her crying was unbelievable!
No Diana I have seen in regional/international productions has ever come close to what Alice Ripley and Marin Mazzie were able to do on that stage!
