After seeing Rachel Tucker's performance as Elphaba in Wicked last month, I left the theatre immediately thinking she gave a tony-worthy performance. Im curious as to other replacement performances you've seen that would cause you to think the same

Not exactly the same question, but I'm sure many of the responses in the thread below could apply to this one as well:

I agree with Marin Mazzie in N2N. She was mesmerizing and profound. Pretty much equal to Alice, who so deserved her Tony.
I would add Bernadette Peters in the revival of A Little Night Music. I really wish she had played Desiree from the start and been on the cast recording. The night I saw her performance from front row center mezz at the Walter Kerr I knew immediately it would stay with me forever, and so it has.

I think you are mistaken. Dean Jones was not a replacement in Company. He was in the original cast. Larry Kert was his replacement very early on...and was fabulous. The bonus track of the anniversary recording of the original cast of Company actually has Larry Kert singing Being Alive...in addition to the original Dean Jones songs.

I feel like I'm the only person who disliked both Marin and Jason (ESPECIALLY Jason). I felt nothing from their performances. Besides Marin's impressive "You Don't Know," (HOW DID SHE SCREAM LIKE THAT EVERY NIGHT??) I was left cold.

I think Annaleigh Ashford's G(a)linda is better than Idina Menzel's Elphaba, and could easily have taken the Tony, had she originated. Stephanie J. Block's Reno Sweeney was about as Tony worthy as you can get. I also strongly believe that had Carly Rae Jepsen originated in "R&H's Cinderella", that she would have been Tony nominated. She wouldn't have won, but goodness, did she give a mesmerizing and magical performance. Totally under looked.

Too funny! Before I even opened this thread, my first through was Rachel Tucker in Wicked. Although she is not a replacement, Annalisa Leaming's Anna in The King and I was definitely Tony-worthy. I would also add Alison Luff as Miss Honey.

A special Tony Award.

Carmen cusack when she was Nellie on the South Pacific tour and Rachel York when she was Reno on the anything goes tour. Both performances were tony worthy. Aaron lazar in light in the piazza was tony worthy, and sting in the last ship.

I'm sorry but I don't think Carly Rae is a good actress at all. She definitely has charm though.

I didn't see Alison as Elphaba but no offense to anyone else, she really was in her own class as Miss Honey.

Reba McEntire in the revival of Annie Get Your Gun. She was everything Annie is supposed to be just by tapping into her true country girl self. The score felt ABSOLUTELY fresh and new with her country western approach to the material. Perfect casting! All due respect for Bernadette Peters, she was just miscast.

Occasionally, Tony's should be given out for a replacement actor. You could not have separate categories like regular Tony's but you could have one for actor and actresses and supporting roles all in 1 category.
To many performances go unrecognized and many times they are better than the originals

Not a replacement, but an understudy: Elena Shaddow was mesmerizing and took my breathe away when I saw her on for Kelli OHara in Brides of Madison County. And admittedly she did the accent better than Kelli.
Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch in A Little Night Music is also a night of theatre I'll never forget.
