Tony for Best Revival of a Play?
Tony for Best Revival of a Play?#1

To me, the most competitive category at the Tonys this year in terms of nominations is Best Revival of a Play, not just because there are 13 candidates, but also because a lot of them got favorable reviews and the precursors were all over the place. Here are the 13 candidates:
Boeing-Boeing (Drama Desk nom, Drama League nom)
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Come Back, Little Sheba (Outer Critics Circle nom)
The Country Girl (Drama Desk nom)
Cymbeline
Cyrano de Bergerac (Outer Critics Circle nom)
The Homecoming (Outer Critics Circle nom)
Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Outer Critics Circle nom, Drama League nom)
Macbeth (Drama Desk nom, Drama League nom)
Old Acquaintance
Pygmalion
The Ritz (Drama League nom)
Top Girls
My guess is Boeing-Boeing, The Homecoming, Macbeth, and Top Girls, but the only ones I think are completely out of the question are Old Acquaintance and The Ritz. What do you think?

The only reason TOP GIRLS would take the fourth slot away from the much more deserving CYRANO DE BERGERAC would be because it is still running.
Stupid reason to not recognize a gloriously executed revival of a classic. But it might just happen.

Boeing-Boeing, The Homecoming, Macbeth, and Top Girls
I think those 4 shows will be the lucky winners who make the cut in this rediculously competitive category. Each is definitly worthy of recognition, and I honestly could see any of the 4 winning the top prize too. Although, I suspect Tony Voters may have such a wonderful time at Boeing-Boeing they cant help themselved but voting for it. The Homecoming will probably suffer since it is closed. Macbeth's award should be Patrick Stewarts, because the production itself, imo, is a tad bizzare. If the voters are smart, and that changes from year to year, they'll stick with Top Girls and see it has a brilliant message. So yeah...I could see any of these 4 taking the top prize.

I wholeheartedly agree with WBaF.
CYRANO is deserving just as much as TOP GIRLS - pertaining to a nomination - and I truly hope that SOME nominators recgonize and realize that. Admittedly, I haven't seen the current revival playing the Biltmore, but will be booking a seat for later this month. There's no offense meant to the good folks working their tails off night-after-night, that's for sure. I just feel that CYRANO (having closed in January) deserves just as much an opportunity of being nominated than currently running productions. I guess it's just personal preference over anything else.

re: Tony for Best Revival of a Play?#5
Posted: 5/10/08 at 7:00pmNot that this means anything, but I feel like there is usually a Roundabout show in the bunch. I would not be surprised if Les Liaisons takes a spot over Top Girls. Personally, my picks would be Boeing-Boeing, Cyrano de Bergerac, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, and Macbeth. But I also didn't care for The Homecoming, while most people did.

I'd like to know that too, since TG isn't in your "Bway Season Schedule" Limelight Mike.
Cyrano was all about Kevin Kline for me. The production had its ups and downs, but TG is too good and too current of a message to not recognize. Not to mention that cast... The critics saw that, hoping the Tony nominators do too.

"But I also didn't care for The Homecoming, while most people did."
Thought I was the only one who didn't care for it.

Posted: 5/10/08 at 7:37pmadd me to that list of those who didnt care for it. respect it for what it was, but didnt really care for it. Then again, i've never sat through a Pinter play i did care for. Different strokes i guess.
