The line about the carcass is a bit much, even for Riedel.

I think Riedel is underestimating the possibility of Kinky Boots taking home the Tony for Best Musical. The only award Matilda has is the Drama Desk. When pitted against Kinky Boots for the Drama League and the Outer Critics Circle Awards, Kinky Boots won.

I do think Cyndi Lauper will take home the award for best score and I happen to think that Pippin will take home the most awards total. (This is reminiscent of 2008 when South Pacific did just that.)

I do think the article is written as his personal opinions and choices are facts - not his selections. So it sort of takes the wind out of many of his statements.

That said, when has any award show not had some controversy around it?

This is all small potatoes compared to the brouhaha between Russia and Azerbaijan regarding the 'slap in the face' Azerbaijan gave Russia regarding Eurovision votes.

When the U.S. and Great Britain's top diplomats include the Tonys and 'the RSC's cold arrogance' as part of their meeting agenda, then I'll be impressed.

Fair enough. I do think that Kinky Boots has as good a shot as Matilda. (And I actually think it could very well win.)

I agree. It basically boils down to "Here's some juicy gossip: PEOPLE WANT THEIR SHOW TO WIN A TONY!"

Pretty tame for Riedel.

The Eurovision article is more interesting. I haven't watched the show yet, but I'm curious about that vote. The whole thing sounds bizarre, though it seems it would not have ultimately made a difference.

It would make me laugh though, if the US took the Tonys as seriously, and the lead story on ABC's World News Tonight were:

"Matilda Attacked by Stiletto Heel of Kinky Boot"

The bottom line is: NO ONE KNOWS. When someone says "Boots is a lock" or "It's Hanks' to lose" it's a guess- educated at best. But these articles DO stir up controversy and add drama to the evening.

Can you even BELIEVE the level of attention these two countries' governments are devoting to this?

Actually, yes. Eurovision has been such a MASSIVE international event for nearly 60 years now. Since countries can't vote for themselves, neighboring countries always vote for each other. There is months of buildup and voting before the finals. And given the number of viewers they have and the number of countries involved, it's no surprise there would be a government response to voting fraud. A compromise to the process could jeopardize viewership to a massive degree.

I totally agree about Lauper, though Eurovision winners rarely have anything to do with good songwriting. It's all about the performance or the buzz on the performer. "Hard Rock Hallelujah" is the perfect example of how irrelevant song writing actually is to winning Eurovision. And many countries can't afford to host the event, so they put little effort into their entry and campaigning the song.

Thank you for making the thread more interesting. And continue to post what you want just like everyone else.

This thread was about the Tony awards. Like most of the threads. Only this one had a boring article attached written by a boring person and nobody really seemed to care that much.
