Would you say that to all the refugees around the world who had to flee their country? I mean obviously the U.S. is not in a state of chaos and war (for most people anyway) like many of those countries are, but fleeing is some times the smartest and safest choice for people. Also, this quote makes me think you didn't bother reading O'Hare's thoughts why after a lifetime of activism and fighting he decided to bounce now.

Excuse me? The United States is at war with 7 other countries with Iran and North Korea possibly being added to the list in the near future. The military industrial complex basically flourishes on perpetual wars.

I think you know what I meant but I get you're trying to either be smart or make a point that I did not even touch upon. I obviously was asking if people leaving their home countries due to violence and chaos are cowards. When I stated that the U.S. not being in a state of war, I meant that people in this country may not be facing the same sort of widespread violence and chaos on the homefront and your examples are wars that are being fought externally and thus the average American is not living those wars first-hand. Many refugees fleeing other countries are in basic chaos and are running from a high level violence, destruction, and civil wars that they are experiencing at home. When I said the U.S. is not in a state of war what I mean is internally and domestically. If the violence is happening outside their borders, then there would not be the same mass exodus that would happen if it was happening within. I thought that was pretty obvious with context, you know how things should be read.
Of course, there is violence in many areas of the U.S. and many people in those areas do feel they are living in a war. that's why I said "most people". Anyway, if you want to get technical, some pedantic types would say we're not at war with those nations but rather are using military action (sure feels like a war to me) since Congress has not declared war since 1942.
