Decided just for the heck of it to look at the YouTube clips of the performances on CBS's YouTube page and see what kind of numbers they drew. It's probably a solid gauge of audience size/mainstream popularity.

1) Dear Evan Hansen--337,000

2) Come From Away--133,000

3) The Great Comet--82,000

4) Miss Saigon--66,000

5) War Paint--62,000

6) Falsettos--56,000

7) Hello, Dolly--47,000

Tonys Youtube Views Bandstand--41,000

9) Groundhog Day--23,000

*numbers are approximate

A little surprised Bandstand and Groundhog Day are at the bottom.

That shouldn't be some random smiley face, it automatically did it when trying to type "8 )"

And I'm not sure if it says anything since there is no way to account for repeat views.  You also have to keep in mind that going to youtube to watch these sort of thing is a very specific demographic....particularly the DEH demographic.

Top three definitely sound about right, though I'm attributing DEH being so far ahead due to the fact that it has a much larger under 30 audience than CFA and TGC and therefore having more heavy internet users. I'm surprised Hello, Dolly! isn't at the bottom by a large margin, and it's a little weird that Miss Saigon is number four given its box office numbers (though I guess, similarly to DEH, it has a large online cult following.)

We think alike, coreman! I've also been interested over the past few days how many views each award-winning speech has accrued. It's less of a popularity gauge than the performances, but for what it's worth...

1: Bette Midler - 282,000 views

2: Ben Platt - 130,000 views

3: Laurie Metcalf - 29,000 views

4: Cynthia Nixon - 24,000 views

5: Rachel Bay Jones - 22,000 views

6: Gavin Creel - 13,000 views

7: Michael Aronov - 6,700 views

8: Kevin Kline - 6,300 views

Dear Evan Hansen certainly has a big following of young people, but so does The Great Comet. For different reasons of course, one centers the plot around that demographic, the other is outside the box and quirky which attracts young people. A tad surprised that Come From Away has more views, though I love that show a ton so I'm not upset.

No clue how Bandstand is below Hello Dolly. One of the best performances of the night compared to the worst.

I think Come From Away is appreciated by all ages equally, DEH largely appeals to teens and their parents with people in their mid 20s to mid 30s seeming to be a bit more cynical in regards to it and Natasha Pierre seems to be embraced by under 35s much more than over 35s.

And the factual basis for your thoughts as to what demographic groups DEH appeals to is what?

When I saw DEH, it probably had the biggest teen audience of any Broadway show I've seen other than Spring Awakening. Plus, I mean, it is a show about a high school student – what other age group would be its target demographic?

CBS seems to have made only certain performances and speeches available outside of the US, which is baffling, which I'm sure affects the views as well. I live in Canada and and the only performances from the musicals that were made available were Come From Away and War Paint. I had to use a proxy in order to watch the other performances. The same goes with speeches, out of all the big acting awards Bette's and Laurie Metcalf's were available and the others weren't. I don't really understand the point of making some available for non-US (or maybe it's just Canadian viewers??) viewers and others not but it's pretty disappointing. It's 2017 and there are obviously ways around it nowadays but it would be nice not to have to go an extra step just to watch certain performances or speeches.

Also, the show that wins best musical is bound to garner views from people that want to see what it's about, without being interested or even aware of the other nominees.

Who said anything about factual basis? When I've been at the show, I looked around to see what the audience was made up of and who was giving it the best response. Likewise, I notice the type of people that praise/criticize it online. Anecdotal evidence.

What complete BS. Here is what you said:

people in their mid 20s to mid 30s seeming to be a bit more cynical in regards to it

So the basis of that statement is that you've been to the show once or twice (or more, you don't actually say) and you could tell by looking around the audience that the response of those in their mid 20s to mid 30s was more cynical about the show than the response of teens or their parents? And/or you can tell who the show appeals to by reading anonymous posts, because you can tell what "type of people" praise it or criticize it? Seriously? Again, BS.

Seriously, calm down. Even in the part of my post you quoted I said 'seeming to be' not 'definitely are'. I read non-anonymous opinions on shows too.

Dear Evan Hansen does have a large teen audience but also it's a huge parent audience. I know so many parents who've seen it and relate to it in a completely different way than young people, but find it equally as moving.

It's funny you say that, because I honestly have no clue what TGC's demographic is. Every time I go, I'm usually one of less than around fifteen people that look younger than twenty-one there. The majority of people do seem to be a part of the over thirty-five crowd, but, like you said, a lot of older people dislike the show/"don't get it." I guess we'll see what their "real" audience is once Josh leaves.

Yeah, I've always thought the older audiences were due to Groban's involvement but the younger people seem to be the ones more enthralled by what's going on.
