As gay rights activists gear up to protest 'Hairspray' thanks to John Travolta's affiliation with Scientology, the star of the movie says there's no homosexual overtones in the movie.
"There is nothing gay in this movie," Travolta said during an interview with the London Times. "I'm not playing a gay man," he added, saying the dissenting comments were "from just one guy, and John Waters blew them right out of the water."
The controversy began when gay rights groups argued that Travolta's faith, Scientology, has reportedly sought to find a cure for homosexuality.
"Travolta, a prominent Scientologist, has no business reprising an iconic gay role, given his [religion's] stance on gay issues," Kevin Naff, managing editor of the Washington Blade, said.
Travolta strongly denies any homophobic ties to his religion.
"Scientology is not homophobic in any way," he said. "In fact it's one of the more tolerant faiths. Anyone’s accepted."
In 'Hairspray,' a remake of the 1988 version of the film, Travolta plays the super-sized female character Edna Turnblad.
"Edna could well be my most daring character," Travolta bragged, citing his roles in "Pulp Fiction" and "Saturday Night Fever" as other tough calls.

Posted: 7/3/07 at 7:18pmHe's pretty stupid to go on record saying that "Scientology is not homophobic in any way." He should have said that while there are some Scientologist who continue to be narrow-minded, as with any religion, there are those who are accepting of all people no matter what their race or sexual orientation.

Posted: 7/3/07 at 7:23pmHe's gotta be pretty tough to say that Edna is HIS most daring role out of everything he's done.

Posted: 7/3/07 at 7:31pmI certainly don't, and I advocate the use of quotes around the word.

Posted: 7/3/07 at 7:33pmMe too, and usually I "think" the use of quotes around words is obnox.
