Trevor the musical opens at Writers Theatre

Trevor the musical has opened at Writers Theatre outside Chicago. Based on the Oscar winning movie Trevor (1994) it has been expanded into a full scale 2 hour musical. I found it a very entertaining and thoughtful musical about gay youth. The lead actor - Eli Tokash - gives an award winning performance. The audience reaction was highly enthusiastic.

I see this on Sunday! I am holding off on the reviews until I see it.

I actually have a drag show at 3 p.m. with the show at 6 p.m., so cross your fingers I get there on time!

Oh man, this musical is really good. Of course, growing up in rural Oklahoma where my only escape from conservative life was obsessing over Gwen Stefani, I may be biased about a "weird" kid obsessed about Diana Ross.

I just want to say to keep an eye out for this show. Right now, it's very "Off-Broadway" not yet up to the Broadway quality. And there are a few missing plot points that aren't important, but could easily be tied together. However, this musical is a must see if you're in the area.

The cast is terrific but the writing pulls too many punches. Why so scared to show how bullies behave? Is it for the benefit of the kids in the audience? Their parents? Grandparents? If they don't know what happens they should.

Act One wisely centers on the talent show with Trevor's attempt to choreograph a dance for the jocks and the guy he's fallen for. It fits the needs of a musical and gives the plot some structure. Act Two is where things get shaky.

Trevor is outed by some "mean girls" and the jocks stop speaking to him. He finally finds a note from his crush calling him a "fairy." Why a note instead of a conversation? Why fairy instead of f******? Why does no one threaten violence? Trevor does try to kill himself after all. There's a reason it inspired "The Trevor Project." Why are the writers so timid?

As someone who lived through violent bullying myself I hate to see the edges get sanded off so that folks can ignore what really happens.

I agree with Sally here. I'm not sure why the whole situation is dealt with in such a tentative way. It's like an after school special from the 70s. I also felt like the original songs didn't do a whole lot to elevate the material. The Diana Ross songs were well placed and used well, I thought. Some of them really soared... but I wish I'm Coming Out had been used in context.

I cried a lot in the last 20 minutes but I found it came more from reflecting on my own experiences rather than the show itself.

Jesus saves. I spend.
