I have a ticket to Office Hour on Sunday evening, Nov 26. I will only be in NYC for a few days after Thanksgiving, I knew there weren't going to be many options for Sunday evening so I went ahead and purchased a ticket to Office Hour. But now there are two other shows I am more interested in (Describe the Night or People Places and Things, trying to decide between the two). I called the box office at the Public and they said I had option of turning my ticket to Office Hour into a donation. Has anyone does this before? Do they give me some sort of paperwork that I can claim on my taxes?

I haven’t done a at the Public but did it at the Rubin Museum. Yes, they should give you something to document it for tax purposes.

Thank you jbird, I think that is what I will do since the Public told me they would frown upon me selling or giving my ticket to someone else
They can frown all they like, but there is no reason you couldn't give it to someone else. (Note: I'm not suggesting you shouldn't donate it....but you shouldn't feel pressured to do so. Same about selling it.)
It would be a nice gesture to donate, but whoever told you that they “frown upon” selling or giving away the ticket is a jackass. They won’t lose money if you do so. Do as you like.

FYI... go see People, Places, and Things. It blew me away.

Thank you all. I don't have any friends or anyone I know in NYC that would be interested in the ticket. What would be the best way to try selling the ticket, if I decide that's what I want to do? Posting here? Would Stubhub be out? I've never re-sold a ticket before.

The show currently has seats available for every performance, so you're not likely to find much traffic on Stubhub for this show. And the the amount you net through them would have to be substantially lower than face, since they take a cut from the buyer and seller. (Of course, this could change if it gets stellar reviews and becomes a hot ticket). I'd just offer it here with a decent discount.
