I got to see Tyne Daly in her "return" engagement at the Marquis Theatre, front row center. There aren't enough superlatives to lavish on that performance. I have always counted myself lucky to have been witness to what (IMHO) are some of the finest performances ever on a stage in recent history; Diana Rigg in MEDEA, Janet McTeer in A DOLL'S HOUSE, Tyne Daly (and Bernadette Peters) in GYPSY, Lea Salonga in MISS SAIGON, Fiona Shaw in MEDEA, Kathleen Turner in VIRGINIA WOOLF, Cherry Jones in DOUBT, Jordan Baker in GARDEN DISTRICT, David Suchet in AMADEUS, the list goes on and on. But back to the original thread, the CD of that production of GYPSY is an excellent reminder of an amazing afternoon in the theatre. She could not have been more UN-Cagney and Lacey. She has really come into her own right as a theatre star, and not only a TV personality. I remember when it was announced she would take that part everyone was like, "WHAT?!" But, again, if you haven't SEEN it, don't judge based solely on the CD. If we went by that, we'd think Bernadette really couldn't sing the score of SONG AND DANCE, which was recorded (supposedly) in the throes of bronchitis or something. But, after seeing that video at Lincoln Center, all one can say is, WOW! But that's for another thread.
tyne lost a significant amount of weight during this production. by the time she picked up her tony she was looking trim, but when she started out she was quite a bulky sight.

So, to not start a new thread, what does everything one think about the Bette film version?

I saw this production of GYPSY at the St. James
Up until then I had never seen the show performed live on the stage. I was only familiar with the 1962 motion picture starring Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood.
I have to say that this production was one of the best that I have seen. Tyne Daly isn't a singer in the vein of a Merman or a Peters but she conveyed so much emotion in her interpretation that it didn't matter. You felt her frustration, despaeration and downright ballsiness in this role and when it came time for "Rose's Turn" she hit a home run. Everyone was top notch in this version: Jonathan Hadary was a great Herbie and Crista Moore, I can't give her enough praise she was an excellent Louise/Gypsy. I have such great memories of this show. I had the good fortune to see it twice. The recording doesn't even begin to do Daly's performance justice but it does capture Moore's performance beautifully.
crista moore --best louise/gypsy ever.
Okay...glad to see lots of Tyne love here, but I was not bowled over by Christa Moore as Gypsy. I liked Tammy Blanchard better and LOVED Cynthia Gibb in the TV movie. She was my favorite. I love Bette, but not in that movie.
I thought Cynthia Gibb was terrible...blah...

There are a few more pictures in the CD booklet, too.

She was certainly not ghastly in the role. The recording is awful, but in the theatre her performance overcame her lack of singing ability. She was truly awesome in the role, she acted it better than most of the other Roses.
Garland Grrrl -- I agree with your Crista Moore comment.
This also had the best "Gotta Have a Gimmick" trio I've ever seen or heard. They literally stopped the show the night I saw it...

Cynthia Gibb?!!!! NOT
Natalie Wood did a better job than she did.
As a matter of fact Wood is a damn near perfect Louise/Gypsy.
Marquise --- Natalie WAS the perfect Louise.
Actresses chosen can usually do the "pre-star Louise" well, or the "star Gypsy" well, but not usually nail both. Natalie nailed both. Her last scene with Roz in the dressing room has never been matched.
I was thinking about stage Louises myself, and I have not seen a better one than Crista Moore.
I'm proud to say I worked on this production. You will never find a better cast GYPSY than this one. Every cast member was perfect. Every single one.
Tyne was not a great singer, and sick or not, that recording will never sound good because of it. You had to see her onstage to get it.
Not enough credit ever goes to producer Barry Brown for this, but he saw Tyne sing on the Dolly Parton show, and brought the idea to the Weisslers. They produced it together.

"Finally, there was a reason why they used Bette Midler in the tv movie. I believe it's because they knew Tyne Daly couldn't pull it off."
That is total bull. They used Bette Midler in the tv movie because she wanted to do it and she was a huge star. She was a MOVIE star whereas Tyne Daly was a popular television actress. The tv movie wouldn't have been made if they didn't have a star of Midler's level.
natalie's strip is the best. Gypsy Rose Lee said it gave her tears of fond remembrance.

I disagree. Tyne Daly is a very well known tv star and with "Gypsy" being a tv movie, she could have drawn in a huge audience. However, they knew she couldn't sing the role. I think her appearance in "Bye Bye Birdie" was her way of saying "I could have done it."

A very well known TV star is nothing compared to a movie star, especially of Bette Midler's popularity. When they did Gypsy TV musicals hadn't been done for a very long time, they wouldn't have done it without a big, big star. If you think that Tyne Daly was (or is) on the same level as Bette Midler in terms of star power you are living in a dream. "Bye Bye Birdie" was made in the wake of other succesfull TV musicals (Gypsy, Cinderella, Annie...) It wouldn't have been made if they didn't have Jason Alexander who was a HUGE TV star because of Seinfeld. It couldn't have been made on the strength of Daly's star power alone.
Also, I saw Tyne Daly in Gypsy and she was astonishing. She brought things to the part no one had before. But, the recording is awful and isn't a good representative of the show.
I revived this thread because I just bought the CD and felt I needed to get opinions on the live performance given I was kind of upset I even bought the recording. It's great to know that Tyne Daly was a great Rose, it's just disappointing you can't really tell a lot from the recording. I believe the reason Bette Midler did Gypsy was not because she is/was a bigger star than Daly, I've heard she had been dreaming to play this role for ages and therefore wouldn't let the producers of the TV version do it without her.

Maybe I need to clarify myself, I didn't say she did Gypsy because she was a bigger star, I said that because she wanted to do it, and she was a big star they never would have considered using Daly.

I guess I'm in the minority but I love my Gypsy cd with Tyne Daly. The recording is perfect and she is too. Rose's Turn is a knock out and devastating at the same time.

I read one on ATC that she slapped the stage during "Well, someone tell me when is it my turn! Don't I get a dream for myself? Startin' now it's gonna be my turn!" Is this true? If so, I think it would have been stunning to see live.
And I too enjoy the recording. Her acting really comes across well on the CD even though her voice isn't great on it.
