Joan Rivers replaced Linda Lavin in "Broadway Bound." By the way, Sondheim said that Linda Lavin's Rose was the closest any performer every came to the REAL Rose. I didn't see her but apparantly, she was magnificent. Tyne Daly's Rose left me cold. The greatest of all the Roses was Angela Lansbury.

I saw Tyne as Rose and she was incredible. She may not have been the best singer, but her acting made up for it. She had a ferocity that made you completely understand the character and other people's reactions toward her monstrosity. It really was an amazing acting job.
(I don't have the recording, so I cannot comment on how it compares to the quality of the show.)
I saw Angela Lansbury, Roz Russel in the movie, Bette Middler and Bernadette Peters (unfortuneately ruining a great show) and I have to say
Tyne Daly was an AMAZING ROSE! Yes she not the best singer and at times sang flat but my God she moved you liked no other Rose ever could. She was a power house and you got out of her way. She was the most believable Rose I've ever seen.
I went with total reservations. A TV actress playing Rose? Preposterous. But she had me from the words "Hit the baby with a pink spotlight"
A flawless interpretation. An Amazing Performance. And a Tony to back it up.
Yes. I heard she was amazing.
As for the abysmal Bette Midler Gypsy; when did Bette Midler forget how to act? She was uncanny in The Rose; wonderfully effective in Beaches. But by the time she got to Gypsy, she played not Rose but Bette Midler.
I had high expections of Bette in the role having been a fan. But I was hugely dissapointed by the lack of work that she put into it. She also played Bette on that ridiculous sit-com.
There really is a difference between actors (Tyne Daly) who always put the work in and performers who at a certain time in their careers just be themselves. (Bette)

I agree. I think Ms. Midler made a terrible Momma Rose. and I hated her singing , which I normally love.

I agree that Bette Midler played Bette Midler as Momma Rose in Gypsy, she didn't become the character. I also believe the comment that Bernadette Peters ruined the show was very much uncalled for.

I believe what he said was that she came the closest PHYSICALLY to the real Rose. She was unbearable in the role.

and chita33 do you have a foot fetish? hmmmm?
Lavin's acting was ridiculous. Let's start with the Irish accent she had that her father didn't have. What was that??

Some photos of the Tyne Daly Gypsy costumes exist at www.reagleplayers.com under photos and GYPSY. They used the sets and costumes right after the show closed in New York and had Jana Robbins (Tyne's stand-by)play Rose and Michelle Pigliavento (Crista's understudy)play Louise. They both appear in some of the photos.
