Hey BroadwayGuy2, don't feel bad. David Burtka is hot and has a great voice. He's the perfect Tulsa. Too bad we can't see him dance on a CD. He's a very good reason for wanting the new cd. David Burtka

I know. I have enjoyed him since "The Play About The Baby". And not just because he has nude most of the time. He also toured with Beauty And The Beast -- that was when I was introduced to his amazing abilities when it comes to dancing.

So I randomly saw the Gypsy cast recording starring Tyne Daly at a used CDs store and bought it because I loved the show when I saw Bernadette Peters on it and everytime I listen to the cast recording I get reminded of that mesmerizing experience.
I hated the Tyne Daly recording. Does anyone else have more accounts of Daly's performance? I was just annoyed by the fact she got the Tony and Peters didn't. Not only do I believe her voice is completely out of tune, but I don't think much of her acting in the recording. I was so disappointed, because I have heard Lansbury's Rose's Turn and I can understand why she got the Tony but I don't get that from Daly's performance.

Tyne Daly was excellent live. The production was very smooth and accomplished, and Jonathan Hadary was probably the best Herbie ever. When she did the recording, she was very sick, hence why she sounds like crap. Don't judge her performance by the sub-par cast CD is all I can say.

As someone who did get to see Tyne Daly in GYPSY, I can respond to those of you who wonder how she performed.

First and foremost, I am a HUGE fan of Tyne Daly. She can act better than most females out there, no matter what the medium...TV, stage or movies. She is one of the few actresses that is so pure and real when she performs that she brings tears to my eyes. However, in no way, shape or form is she a singer. As much as I loved her performance, I had to admit to the person I dragged along to see her (and he didn't want to go in the first place), that she bordered on awful as a singer. As far as I know, she didn't have a cold the day I saw her, and her voice was thin, weak and screechy.

Then again, not all broadway performers are great singers, but after seeing quite a few who are great singers; it also holds true in that not all great singers are great actors or actresses. Sometimes, you sacrifice one thing for another, and sometimes you hit the jackpot!

Daly was a very good Rose in the theatre, as others have mentioned. No, she is not a fabulous singer, but she somehow pulled it off, and the CD doesn't quite reflect how she came off live. Still, something happens to Daly in the recording studio, as she's not a hell of a lot better on Call Me Madam or On The Town, yet she somehow is much more confident on stage. Strange.

Personally I thought Tyne Daly's performance was nothing short of amazing. I had been involved with several Gypsy productions and I found her rivetting. Whatever shortcomings she had in voice she made up for with her acting. It is still one the top ten musical performances I've seen , and I've seen a lot.

I actually saw her do it twice, and she was brilliant!! Her singing was well suited for that role. It makes it more poignant. You say she really maynot have been a "star" like her daughter, but she had drive. Her Rose's Turn brought you goosebumps. In response to the earlier responses Tyne stayed with the show a year, and was replaced by Linda Lavin. Lavin stayed with it for about 6 months, but the show closed. Based on Tyne's success that production re-opened at the Marquis Theatre for short engagement.

Tyne Daly, in my opinion, can do no wrong. She was an AMAZING Momma Rose in "Gypsy." This is a role that doesn't require a great singing voice. What I love, is when people want to use that as a defense for performers they like, but they throw it in the face of another actor. Take, for example. Natasha Richardson from "Cabaret." Now, I prefer my Sally's to have a good voice, it makes the character more tragic. Natasha, let's be honest, has a terrible voice. Yet, every time I mention that, I get verbally assaulted with "THAT ROLE ISN'T SUPPOSED TO SING WELL!! SHE WAS BRILLIANT! YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!! AAAAHHH!!!!" hehe Now, Momma is a role, I feel, that can go either way. She can sing well, i.e. Ms. Peters, Ms. Merman (though I'm not a fan of her voice) Ms. Midler. However, sometimes it's the acting that makes the role so amazing, despite the lack of vocals i.e. Rosalind Russell and Tyne Daly. I can't wait to see her on stage next year in "Rabbit Hole." She's amazing, it would have been an honor for anyone to see her live in "Gypsy." She was brilliant.

Tyne was FANTASTIC in the part. Unless you actually saw her in it, you really can't weigh in on this. It was her acting that made her one of the best to play Mama Rose EVER. You can't see that on the CD.

And her singing was fine on stage. Not great, but not bad either. And she's "Judy Garland" next to Christina Applegate and some of these other recent Broadway stars, if you want to know the truth.

I stand by my original assessment.

Tyne Daly didn't have the vocals to sing it, and this is a score that needs a strong voice. Even Merman admitted that it was a difficult score to sing. Daly had the force to play the drive that Rose had, but she never seemed to turn it off. There were no quiet moments in her performance.

I think Jonathan Hadary was a great Herbie.

Whoever costumed Tyne Daly should have been drawn and quartered, burned at the stake and had their ashes stomped on. Her costumes made her look like a walking, talking barrel.

Finally, there was a reason why they used Bette Midler in the tv movie. I believe it's because they knew Tyne Daly couldn't pull it off.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

You must have seen a different "Tyne Daly" than I did.

She was an amazing Rose and deserved her Tony. She was so wonderful with the other actors and she and Hadary had amazing chemistry onstage. I thought she brought sex appeal to the role (much like I would imagine Lansbury did.) I was disappointed that Peters didnt seem to have the same appeal. I've seen Daly, Peters and Buckley and Daly was by far the best. You have to like Rose, despite her personality, and Daly was the only one who was the mother from hell that you really felt sorry for. I saw her do the part 3 times...and she did not have the voices for it (I am a singing snob, too) but still was mesmerized by her.

Yeah, that Theoni Aldredge. What a hack. What does she know about designing costumes.

The costumes from the Daly revival were very 80's. If you look at the way they were designed, Bea Arthur could have worn them on The Golden Girls.

Ms. Daly was brilliant in Gypsy - voice or no voice, and that whole production was top notch! I had the pleasure of seeing it several times.

Tyne Daly's performance is likely to be among the top 5 best musical theatre performances I've ever seen in my life, if not the top. She attacked the text with the ferocity and intelligence that I've only seen actors use for working on Shakespeare. Brilliant in every respect.

Tyne was incredible as Rose, I loved every minute of it, and yes, I had a friend in that production too but it surely never sawyed my view of it. Tyne got it right, For my money.

A couple of comments have been made regarding the costuming of the production. As a costumer I find this intriguing. Does anyone know where I might be able to find a coupla' photos from the production? I've googled it and have come up with nothing aside from the cd cover.

Thanks!!
Joshua
