Why bother seeing this live? There are billions of DVDs of this thing available in bargain outlets across the planet, save yourself a hundred-odd bucks.
"Today, in order to attract an audience to see a Broadway show, it has to be commercial. Movie-to-stage, collection of jukebox songs, based on a historical event/person, use Hollywood names, etc."
You point out commercial shows as being based on a historical event/person, then you list Gypsy as one of the "original" musicals that people flocked to see. If we go by your definition of a commercial show, then I do not know why you are listing Gypsy. Gypsy is based off the life of a historical figure.
And you call Broadway a theme park, criticizing how movie-to-stage adaptations and jukebox musicals contribute to this, and how no one wants to see the non-commercial productions, yet you have a Xanadu avatar supporting it for a Best Musical Tony win. Xanadu was based on an 80s film and boasts the music of ELO...so why are you so supportive of that, yet seem hostile to Broadway's commercialization, going even further to say the only people who do enjoy non-commercial theatre are the true theatre-lovers? Although I had a fun time, I would not call Xanadu an innovative piece of theatre - it is just as commercial as Wicked, Jersey Boys, Little Mermaid, etc.
ETA: Annie Get Your Gun was also based on a historical figure, and Peter Pan was based on a popular novel. Again, going by Hook's definition, they are not original musicals.
I think it looks kinda cool...
*ducks*
"so why are you so supportive of that, yet criticize people for wanting to relive movies forwards and backwards onstage?"
Don't go bellow the belt... Hook liking Xanadu doesn't discount his point... other things discount his points... but not that.
"Don't go bellow the belt... Hook liking Xanadu doesn't discount his point... other things discount his points... but not that."
Um, yes it does. Xanadu is based off a movie. So is the Shrek musical. Shrek and Xanadu are both commercial productions. Hook seems skeptical of these commercial productions "invading" Broadway, hence the "theme park" comment yet shows support for one of them.
It just seems very hypocritical for someone who seems so against the commercialization of Broadway.
P.S. I am not trying to criticize Xanadu - I liked the show.
couldn't they at least designed a new costume?
"couldn't they at least designed a new costume?"
What about from the book? The whole thing isn't based on the film.

I think it looks FANTASTIC!
I think it may be too literal, but looks very effective.

Actually, there is already another green creature on Broadway besides Elphaba- The Monster in YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN.
Another movie to stage musical that I have no desire to see. Actually this does sadden me. It reeks of being safe! We have seen this already as Roscoe has said on DVD or cable why shell out the bucks to see it again live?
Oh and as far as green characters on Broadway, let us not forget the seasonal Grinch!
The costuming is fantastic. I think it's great that Brian's eyebrows came to good use! Jesus, I hope he can manuever in that thing. We don't need BdJ passing out mid-show.
The make-up and everything is incredible. I thought it was a photoshopped picture at first because it looks too... real.
Yikes, I was seriously looking forward to some Taymor inspired wit with the character. This IS all theme park. So much for taking the source material in a new creative direction.
That complete with really LOUSY songs this show is gonna be quite a drag.
Hey and if you're talking about green on Bway don't forget YF's Monster he's green too.
Hopefully the actors playing Shrek (& if Sutton will have to wear one) with the fat suits on (it does look like one to me! LOL) won't get sick like Michael Crawford + Michael Ball with the one's from Woman in White!
And I have 0 interest in seeing this. Makes me wonder why people bash A Tale of Two Cities!

I wish they'd been a LITTLE more creative...
you people are amazing!!!
why would they be more creative??? IT'S BASED OFF OF A CHARACTER THAT ALREADY EXISTS. you dip****s.
also... you all complain about it being "too literal" ???
LOOK AT LITTLE MERMAID. all of you bashed that **** when it came out as interpretive, as opposed to literal.
stop whining and bitching. perhaps this is a big commercial production but it's NOT disney. it's new and fresh.... with an all-star cast... and a fabulous score.
get over yourselves and lighten up!!! IT WILL BRING MORE PEOPLE TO THE ART OF THEATRE.
some of you, like Roscoe, have your panties bunched up soo tightly. just give it a ****ing rest!!!
It's been said, but no force on Earth could obscure Mr. James' eyebrows.
I'm not a fan of the four songs that have been released so far, but maybe the other ten-or-so are better. Who knows: maybe the show will actually be... good?
Wouldn't be BWW without the snobby snobs.

Harshly said, but I have to agree to an extent.
Jeanine Tesori does some great work. She was involved with one of my favorite shows - Thoroughly Modern Millie. What about Caroline, or Change anyone? And I have to agree, the casting choices for this show sound amazing - Brian d'Arcy James, Sutton Foster, John Tartaglia - who could go wrong?
I don't know why people are already expressing such dislike for the show based on one picture and a few roughly-cut demo songs.
And I'm curious to know if the first show that got people here interested in theatre was a mainstream production or some non-commercial work.
Looks like their going all-out to make this one helluva theatrical event. If the costumes are THAT elaborate and life-like and (pardon me) lovable looking (Disneyland character-ish), just imagine their set and lighting. Should be QUITE an impressive creation (great stage-pictures)
Let's hope the book and music are good too. At least for tourism's sake. DreamWorks looks like their ready to make one unforgettable Bway debut (gotta punch it to Walt D!)... for tourism's sake.

I like the score.
And by creative, I mean, just an outfit change or something. I dunno.
Sutton is the one that I can't wait to see! Figuring out a creative way to get her from princess to ogre and back and forth will be interesting!
