I know a few shows, such as Lestat and Bare (the 2012 revival), recorded a cast recording, but it was never released. They even put up a track from the Bare cast recording on their website (Role of a lifetime, if I remember correctly). Does anybody know why the producers would do that? I believe that the most expensive part of an OBCR is the recording itself - creating copies of the discs is very cheap, it shouldn't cost more than 60 cents for each copy, not to mention that the cast recording could be released online nowadays, so there'd be no need for this part . So, to me, it doesn't make sense that they conclude the expensive part but not follow through on the cheap part - with the sales, they'd probably be able to afford the costs of the disc-copying process.
Also, out of curiosity, does anybody know of any other unreleased cast recordings?

LESTAT is one of the most famous recent examples, reportedly the reason is that it was never mixed and mastered and no one can be bothered.
Historically there have been a few that surfaced as bootleg CD's, like Goddard Leiberson's studio cast album of BITTER SUITE or an obscure 1973 musical called SHELTER.

I know Shuffle Along recorded quite a few songs this year...but weren't released to the public. I don't know if you'd consider that a 'cast recording' though.
The SHUFFLE promo disc was recorded live I believe and only meant for Tony voters or something. AFTER MIDNIGHT released similar live cuts on Youtube during its run.
The original London cast of Mame with Ginger Rogers recorded a cast album, but since she didn't like how she sounded it was never released

I was told by Patrick Page at the stage door last October that Spring Awakening had just finished a cast recording set to be released in January. Never heard anything about it since.

^ would love if that were true! I really loved how the cast sounded. Just wondering why none of the cast would have ever mentioned it!

I'm more surprised that Ken Davenport hasn't launched a Kickstarter campaign for it!!
I really would've loved to have that Lestat recording.
Was that Dracula recording (the one that was done behind the OBC's backs, with James Barbour, Norm Lewis, etc.) ever actually released? I know it floated around the internet for a bit but I thought that was because it leaked.

Don't play with my emotions.
Hasn't it been confirmed multiple times that no Spring Awakening recording would be released... y'know, because it's sort of a terrible idea?

Do any posters have this promo disc? I would be thrilled to re-visit some of the songs sung by that amazing cast.

Comden and Green's Gold Rush musical BONANZA BOUND was also recorded by RCA. When the show closed out of town, RCA cancelled the record. Music Masters (anyone remember it?) later put it out on vinyl. C&G used to perform material from the show "MIsunderstood" and "Inspiration."
SHELTER was written by Cryer and Ford and starred Marcia Rodd and Susan Browning. The York did a revised version a few years ago. Columbia did record it, just never released it. Nice score.
"Bonanza Bound" with a recording of "The Revuers" is actually available through British iTunes. Google "Bonanza Bound" and you can find it.
