A great report in Variety that sums up how the new shows are doing at the box office.
Broadway defies odds
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I don't remember the order of events...but the only speculation made between Groff's non involvement and the producers low balling the salaries came from Riedel (if memory serves) in an article about the economy & theatre.
Anything is possible.

And so is Groff!
I feel like everything worked out the way it should. Creel was going to do "Godspell" and it got canceled, but he found a job in this, which led him to another Tony nomination (And if the world were right, a win).
