Victor/Visctoria Film/stage show — Page 2

While I thought that a stage version of V/V was pointless, I thought the show was better than anything else I saw that year, on Broadway. It had good choreography and great sets, and costumes, and fine performances from its cast. The fact that nothing but Andrews was nominated was a deliberate slap in the face of what the misguided nominating committee saw as the Hollywood infiltration of Broadway. I also saw it with Liza, who was as lousy as anyone could possibly be. It strikes me odd that Liza couldn't sing a note or dance a step, yet it is Julie (who was in fine voice the night I saw it, and certainly danced rings around Liza - who didn't dance a step the night I saw her), gets bashed for her performance. Even without a voice, Julie sings better than Liza. The DVD of the show is pretty mediocre; but it's a nice memento if you actually saw it live. In fact, V/V was one of the last good shows I saw on Broadway or West End. I mean, when I compare it to OKLAHOMA!, MILLIE, WICKED, AVENUE Q, and others, it seems like a masterwork!

I agree. While admittedly, I was 12 when I saw this (and everything is good to a 12 year old,) upon re-watching the show on DVD, I enjoyed it just as much and laughed just as hard. I'm not comparing it to the original movie, that's pointless.

Is "Victor/Victoria" one of the greatest and best broadway shows ever to play on Broadway? Clearly, no. But is it among the worst, as most on this thread are making it seem? Not by a LONG shot. It is no better or worse of a musical than something like THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE or even DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. If VICTOR/VICTORIA opened on Broadway this past season, we would have been lucky to have something that enjoyable, especially among a season of such dreck.

While it is not the worst show ever to open on Broadway it is much closer to the bottom of the list than the top.

It reeks of desperation: Can't come up with a new original idea for a musical? Recycle an old movie. If a piece of garbage like SUNSET BLVD can win a Tony as Best Musical (admittedly with NO competition) then quality is no longer an element. Now if V/V had opened 6 months earlier against SUNSET it might ahev one..but that's not saying much at all!

Well, on this point I strongly disagree. I thing DRS and the glorious PIAZZA are far better shows that V/V. Even MILLIE I think was a better show. But, as you said you saw it when you were 12 and it obviosuly made an impression on you and is perhaps responsible in part for your love of musicals. I'm not trying to say you should NOT like it or have fond memories of seeing it, but compared with the hundreds of other shows that have come before it or since, it doesn't quite rank among the greats.

Liza sang it on tv, I think it was on Regis & Kathy Lee. But I don't think it has`been recorded as yet.

i thought "victor victoria" was better than "DRS" by far.
