Wouldn't it just be easier to watch the DVD of the show?

The major difference is JULIE ANDREWS 20 YEARS OLDER.

And that the movie is wonderful and the stage show is dull. And also that the wonderful Robert Preston was in the movie and the always boring Tony Roberts was in the staged show like nails through a chalk board.

And... a lot of the bits in the movie that you thought would be hard to do on stage, were simply not done on stage!

What a DOG of a show they made of such sparkling source material. (Only SUNSET BLVD is worse as s stage travesty adapted from a classic film!)

Toddy's wonderful comic scene at the end of film is reduced to a brief cameo in the final scene of the stage musical.

NONE of the new songs are a patch on the original film score. "Louis Says" was frequently cut from the show during the run. "If I were a man" was a good idea for a song but weak lyrics and a dull melody undercut it. "Paris Makes Me Horny" ranks as not only the worst song in the show but also one of the worst songs in the American Musical Theatre!

And Julie Andrews wondered why the show was not nominated for a Tony?

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

And what was that word she used in that infamous press conference she gave after a perfomance? Was it Egrogious? I don't rember.

I can't blame her for being pissed. They purposely didn't give it nominations because of some sort of misguided vendetta against the show. "Chronical of a Death Foretold" and "Swinging on a Star" were both closed and still were nominated over "Victor/Victoria. While V/V was certainly NOT a great show (And indeed, "Paris Makes me Horny" is horrible) I think a nomination (and a shot at performing on the telecast) wasn't too much to hope for. (And not a single nod for sets or costumes?)

Maybe it's because I've always had such fondness for Miss Andrews that I actually admired her taking the Tony committee to task and pointing out how "Egregiously Overlooked" V/V was.

But at least that Tony committee back then actually recognized shows that closed before the nominations. You don't see that much anymore.

I HAVE BOTH THE MOVIE AND THE STAGE VERSION ...AND I JUST WATCH THE STAGE VERSION...EVENTHOUGH IT WASNT THE BEST SHOW...I THINK IT HAS GOOD SCENES... "LE JAZZ HOT" IS AMAZING AN AMAZING NUMBER AND SO ARE "LOUIE SAYS", "LIVING IN THE SHADOWS" AND "PARIS BY NIGHT".
THE CAST:
-JULIE ANDREWS IS A DELIGHT AS VICTOR AND VICTORIA.
-RACHEL YORK IS HILARIOUS AS THE NINFOMANIAC NORMA CASSIDY.
-TONY ROBERTS OVERACTS,IN MY POINT OF VIEW.
-MICHAEL NOURI IS GOOD AS KING.
-GREGORY JBARA IS FUNNY IN IT.

BY THE WAY...HAS ANYONE SEEN LIZA OR RAQUEL? WAS RAQUEL AS BAD AS THE CRITICS SAID ? DID THEY HIT THE HIGH NOTES IN "LE JAZZ HOT" AND OTHER SCENES?

Bottom line, the movie is a classic, the show was absolutely horrific.

The truly beautiful should be lawfully restricted from wearing clothing; and the truly butt-ugly should be lawfully mandated from going naked.

I totally disagree. I find the show much better than the movie it was adapted from. Granted, I saw the show on DVD before I saw the movie, but I found the movie difficult to sit through and wanted to reach for the remote control several times.

"Paris Makes Me Horny" is a widely misunderstood song. In my opinion, anyway. "Living In The Shadows" is one of the greatest and emotional songs from a show ever, and "Le Jazz Hot" is an extraordinary number.

One of the major problem with the show is the quality of the star's performance. Julie Andrews, in the movie, was at the height of her vocal ability. Her voice was long gone by the time she began her theatrical run. It is painful to watch and hear her croak through all of the numbers assigned to her.

I find the DVD unwatchable and the cd unlistenable. I feel sorry that a once beautiful voice not only was destroyed but put on display.

The truly beautiful should be lawfully restricted from wearing clothing; and the truly butt-ugly should be lawfully mandated from going naked.

The dvd of the show is unwatchable. I bought it have never made it through. Isaw the show live and hated it then also. I have no idea hy I bought the dvd.
The remastered dvd of the movie is a joy. I re-watch the movie at least once a year. the scene in the reastaurant with the Cockroach always makes me laugh.

Well muscle.. I am sure the producers would have liked more peope to agree with you when the show was running. It was a costly flop. And in my opinon it was horrid.

I thought Rachel York's character was excellent. Why not? It was an EXACT COPY of Leslie Anne Warren's portrayl from the movie, which I also liked!

Praying Decca Broadway will put "Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope" on CD!

Well, I bought the DVD of the film and LOVE IT. I also bought the re-mastered soundtrack, and love it. I usually am pretty independant about what I like and what I don't like, but I have continually heard such bad comments about it and I have no desire to watch or listen to the stage version.

The fil is brilliant, one of my favorites. however, I have the DVD of the play as well, and I'm not impressed. Its just lacking that special something.

"Le Jazz Hot" is a fantastic number but is much MUCH better performed in teh film (and on teh movie soundtrack) than in the stage show or on the Broadway cast recording.

"The Shady Dame from Seville" is another great number that was dumped from the stage version (mainly because Andrews could no longer sing it, much less do it live 8 times a week!)

But a major change for the stage adaptatin was adding musical numbers to scenes set outside the nightclubs. In the movie the characters never sing to eachother. In fact the movie is not really a musical: It has only six numbers (all presented as on-stage entertainment), but it also has a good deal of musical underscoring so it does feel like a musical.

I don't know what all this V/V hate is about, but I thought the show was excellent. Not riveting theatre, but certainly well crafted, well performed, and VERY enjoyable.

No it wasn't. The movie is far superior to the stage version by leaps and bounds. I have no idea why they even decided to film the stage version, if there was one show that didn't deserve to be preserved it was that one.

While I thought that a stage version of V/V was pointless, I thought the show was better than anything else I saw that year, on Broadway. It had good choreography and great sets, and costumes, and fine performances from its cast. The fact that nothing but Andrews was nominated was a deliberate slap in the face of what the misguided nominating committee saw as the Hollywood infiltration of Broadway. I also saw it with Liza, who was as lousy as anyone could possibly be. It strikes me odd that Liza couldn't sing a note or dance a step, yet it is Julie (who was in fine voice the night I saw it, and certainly danced rings around Liza - who didn't dance a step the night I saw her), gets bashed for her performance. Even without a voice, Julie sings better than Liza. The DVD of the show is pretty mediocre; but it's a nice memento if you actually saw it live. In fact, V/V was one of the last good shows I saw on Broadway or West End. I mean, when I compare it to OKLAHOMA!, MILLIE, WICKED, AVENUE Q, and others, it seems like a masterwork!
