Some shows allow mobiles to be scanned while others require print-outs though also know that some StubHub tickets being sold are hard copies that need to be picked up in person at their Midtown location.

Answer:

Enter every on-line lottery. Some lottery entries are due 2 days ahead of time, others one day. Odds of winning on line are generally lower than odds at in-person lotteries.

Both of you should enter the same lotteries, requesting 2 tickets. There is no penalty to you if you do not claim any tickets.

The more popular the show, the lower the odds of winning.

You'll have better luck using RUSH for semi-popular shows.

Just to let you know, generally rush/lottery do tend to happen starting with the first performance, they'll normally announce the policy a day or two before the first previews. And I think previews are discounted in the sense the tickets tend to be $10-$20 cheaper than the price for non-previews.

I think the only real way to secure Hamilton tickets without paying $300+ is through lottery, though another option could be the cancellation line. I actually don't know too much about that process, but I have seen people lining up for it, so presumably it works at least some of the time. Ditto for Dear Evan Hansen.

My guess is that Be More Chill will be very popular from the outset. I made the mistake of holding off on buying off-Broadway tickets in hopes of a rush policy, but they went with lottery only and alas, I missed out. If they do a similar thing for Broadway then I think your best bet would be to get tickets prior.

As for TKTS, I've never done this, but someone told me that the first price you're offered isn't necessarily the cheapest ticket, so sometimes you can ask them if they have other cheaper seats for the same show.

The balcony at the Lyceum is very high, but I think the view is good. When I was there to see The Play That Goes Wrong, I hiked up there to check out the last 2 rows, which are the $49 seats for Be More Chill, and, actually, I preferred row G, which is the last row. It's raised up above row F, which gives it great sightlines, and it's also separated from row F by a metal railing, so you're not crowded, with better legroom. If you're on a budget, I'd recommend it. Here's the view from G 1:
