Voice Teachers

Voice Teachers#1

Posted: 11/13/06 at 7:46pm

hey I'm a 14-year-old girl and am looking for a good voice teacher and we found a man that has awesome recommendations. Do you think it would damage my voice quality if I took lessons from a guy or would it be better if I got lessons from a girl?? By the way I live in a REALLY small town and it is hard to find teachers. Help!?!?

I don't see why it would. I have taken from both male and female voice teachers... I guess it just depends on your preference.

Apparently it's better to take them from a man.

I take them with from a girl with a similar voice type to mine. But I am curious as to why it would be better to take them from a man.

I was always of the opinion that it is best to take lessons from the same gender and range. That way they really understand how to achieve the sound you want with the range you have.

I've taken lessons from both men and women and really have no gripes with either. In fact, I had better experiences with the two males teachers I have had than with the female teacher I worked with in college, but that was due to her teaching styles and techniques and not issues with voice type. Find the most qualified teacher with great referrals and a proven record of success and don't worry about gender or voice type.

All i know is that my choice teacher is amazing and she is a woman. the one i had before her was a woman and i wasnt a big fan of hers. my new voice teacher is still young and has opened me from a baritone to a tenor. i could barely sing an A before and now i sing a E# above High C. lovely. the truth is that its hard to find a great voice teacher. also some Voice Coaches call themselves voice teachers and i dont like that.

Use the student board for this.

The gender of the teacher shouldn't matter. What matters is that you find someone who has been trained and actually knows what they're doing, not just someone who can sing.
