"Follow the plot"?
It's Romeo and Juliet, most people know the plot.

Wouldn't people who don't speak Spanish be unable to follow the plot?
Oh, I dunno, gosh. Have similar things with different languages worked before...?
Do we really know for sure about the Spanish?
- Laurents said it in an interview.
You know, I think Arthur Laurents might be trying too hard with this one.
I mean, to recreate the original Jerome Robbins choreography, yet intensify the story and make the characters realistic and violent...we have a dangerous contradiction here.
Gangsters don't dance. That's why the originals weren't realistic. If he can make it work, good for him, but I just can't see it happening in a consistent or enjoyable way.
But he couldn't use new choreography even if he wanted to. Every Broadway production has to use Robbin's original choreography.
I know ljay, which is why I think the revival isn't such a great idea...

I agree that Maria should be played by a real Latina.

I'm kind of interested to see what is going to happen with the casting!
And I'm excited to see how this develops too.

I can't wait for people to fight over what "real Latina" means.
Am I the only one, or does this smell funny?

"Who are in the callbacks ATM, or is that classified information?"
A few Spring Awakening kids.

Please let Krysta Rodriguez be one of them.

I hope that they're legit enough singers...
Lizzie: It's ambiguous I suppose, but I guess someone who's at least half Latina or something.
I'm just saying it's one of many things for people to get picky over. And we know how theatre people are.
Wouldn't Krysta be too old? If they are really going for 18 and under she is about 5 years too old. In any other revival I'm sure she would get the part.
I'm sure that eighteen-and-under isn't a hard and fast rule, especially if someone looks the part. But the problem with Krysta is that she's not a soprano (is anyone from SA really a legit soprano?), and I really doubt that she'd be able to sing Maria's part at all, let alone eight times a week. I could see her in the ensemble, though.
Sucks. Krysta's great.
I'm expecting to see a lot of Spring Awakening and In the Heights faces in the cast, though...

I wasn't really suggesting Krysta for Maria, I personally think she would be an amazing Anita. She has the dancing chops too.

Is Andrea Burns young enough to be Maria, you think?
I'm fine as long as Jonathan Groff isn't Tony . . .
If they are going for actual teenagers, Andrea Burns is old enough to play Doc. Her "I Have a Love" from A DEEPER SHADE OF RED is beautifully sung though.
^ LOL.
While Andrea would, I'm sure, be awesome -- that was definitely a joke.
I just don't understand the questioning of re-creating the original Jerome Robbins choreography. It was brilliant and is such an important component of the focus of the show as a whole. After FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, Robbins left Broadway for good and concentrated on creating ballets for the New York City Ballet. His work continues full force in the repertoire of that ballet company which performs at the New York State Theatre at Lincoln Center. You don't mess around with a master artist like Robbins, as unpleasant as he was as a person.
*BUMP*
