I think maybe the zodiac motif relates to the line

ljay, I walked by The National Theater earlier in the week to pick up my tickets, and Lin Manuel's name is on the poster.

Yes SondheimGeek, you are correct.
This was always an art show, Bernstein's score is a jazz/Broadway Masterwork, Robbins's staging was Modern Dance in it's time and when done properly with Passion, Stunning.
The set, lighting and costumes will all enhance the play if done right.
I want to see Woolard's designs, he's a wonderful designer.

I took the design as a tip off to:

From forth the fatal loins of these two foes,
a pair of star cross'd lovers take their life.

Maybe that's reading way too deep, but with all the star motif AND a Maria that looks much younger than her Tony (much like the Juliet/Romeo relationship is sometimes interpreted), I thought maybe they were returning to some of Shakespeare's text.

The designs look like a Bus and Truck production of West Side Story. The show logo looks like the one for the 1957 production.

I wonder what the show curtain will be.

And I gotta say, I saw Curtis Holbrook maybe 4 weeks ago and he didn't look buff at all, but in those pictures it looks like he put on a lot of muscle, but maybe it's just the shots.

The show logo is similar to the film logo. The 1957 logo looked nothing like that.

That clock thing reminds me of Wicked way too much. This set design is a bit of a disappointment. This is my all-time favorite musical and I thought the revival was going to blow everyone out of the water. I hope the cast outshines the set. Side Note: I like the Rita Moreno cut out in the gym

The stills from the dancing (love the jets are in the air photo) have me a little excited but really I still feel very bleh about this revival.

the show starts at the national theatre on 12/15.

i bit the bullet and got a ticket for the premiere. i'm sure they are gonna work out some kinks, mostly with regards to the interweaving of spanish. i'll probably see it again afterwards to see how it evolves, assuming it's not terrible.

Re: The zodiac - "A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life", I suppose. Romeo and Juliet compare each other to stars at least once each in the text of the original play, as well, I think. But mostly it's probably meant to be striking. I'm not sure what to think of it.

Exactly. The movie preserved everything that was great about the original (like the choreography), so let other people take a stab at it. It's not like there's only one way to choreograph a show. I say give it some up and coming hip-hop/modern dance type choreographer and see what happens.
