re: WEST SIDE STORY revival scenic designs...

Yeah, not quite sure what's going on with that zodiac/sun dial drop, though I've always liked the idea of wiping out everything around them for "Tonight." I designed the show for a class project way back when and actually set the balcony scene further upstage than normal so that the balcony unit could then travel downstage during "Tonight" while star drops came in behind it wiping out the neighborhood and keeping the focus entirely on the young lovers.

I've certainly seen more inventive designs, but these are serviceable.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Are they still doing the spanish lyrics? It doesn't mention it on the site, and Lin isn't credited for translations.

This is all it says.
groundbreaking new production, directed by the legendary Mr. Laurents, will offer a bold new design that builds on the show’s raw power and emotion to create a fresh experience unlike any that came before it. Don't miss this thrilling presentation of a matchless work of art.

I wonder if they dropped the idea.

Not impressed with the set designs. The gym is okay I guess. Nice perspective in the background. The urban street location looks like a bomb went off. Or some other cataclysmic disaster, like "The Day After Tomorrow." Maybe they're all radiation victims. I know it's supposed to be "suggestive" but it's beyond that. It's disintegrating.

And that first one for Tonight looks like the giant clock background in Wicked.

So, they go for "realism" in casting and language, but they go for fantasy and surrealism in the design? Hmmm.

Josefina Scaglione is beautiful.
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

Yeah, that whole zodiac motif confuses me too.

The only thing I can think of to explain that is that it represents fate/predestination.

"The only thing I can think of to explain that is that it represents fate/predestination."

That was my very first thought as well.

I thought it was interesting for the picture of the gym Tony and Maria are "fake" while everyone else is "fake". I know it has no meaning but it caught my eye and I laughed.

Very interesting. It's not what I expected, but hopefully it fits with the concept.

I like the perspectives, but I do agree that one of the designs looks like a bomb went off. Oh well, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

That Zodiac thing is so wrong and obvious but I really like the Gym and especially under the highway.

The rehearsal fotos look good, it's quite an attractive cast.
It's hard to shoot dance especially during rehearsals but I hope they get the placement and foot positions together, the famous "jump/cool" shot is the best.
Thank God for MegaBus!

I wonder if the zodiac drop will be gone by the time the show reaches Broadway. The other designs are blah.

What's hanging from the ceiling in the gym scene? They're okay, but I was expecting something....bigger? For such a large production the sets seem minimal.

RentBoy86: Those are flowers. It's interesting, but still very unusual.

I loved the minimal sets for Gypsy... The actors were the centerpiece and they filled in the blanks of the environment with their talents and fantastic direction. The Zodiac is interesting, but I've found that sometimes, these set models don't fully reflect the final product.

Keep in mind that lighting (as long as it's good) will enhance and focus in on moments on stage, keeping the set appropriate.

I'm really looking forward to this!

re: WEST SIDE STORY revival scenic designs...

i know it's a dead horse, but it's interesting to revisit the age issue now that there is more information about the rest of the cast. actually, it seems like many of the swings/understudies are in their low 20s... in fact, it looks like one of the swings just turned 18. and frankly, the "older" folks don't look like they stick out (for instance, in the "cool" photo, the gentleman on the far left, sam rogers, is not yet 21, i believe, but riff doesn't look like he's almost 10 years older).

actually, just speculating, but i believe curtis was cast very early. so it wouldn't have worked to have cast a tony younger than him (which many of the candidates other than cavenaugh were, i believe).

re: WEST SIDE STORY revival scenic designs...

Considering this is such a dance-heavy show, I don't think large sets would've been very practical.

"Why are they so big? Isn't WSS supposed to be simple?"

You think a show filled with gang violence, dance, interracial relationships, and directed/with a book by Arthur Laruents is simple?

It's theme is simple, as is the theme in any show. The story itself, can be seen either way.

And the design is complex, but looks simple. That's the key for this show.

re: WEST SIDE STORY revival scenic designs...

I think maybe the zodiac motif relates to the line

"Tonight, tonight,k the world is full of light
With suns and moons all over the place
Tonight, tonight the world is wild and bright
Going mad, shooting sparks into space..."
