You guys have hit the nail on the button and like I've said in the past...I adore the Phantom movie. I still laugh at the bad lip synching and voguing and what not, but I still love it, for it's several-many flaws.
And I really don't understand not only here on BWW but in my local paper and many other places have been saying RENT got awful reviews...since when is approximately 47% good reviews awful? Unless people expected it to do better but many here have expressed that wasn't the case w/ them...I would say it got mixed reviews, most of the positives seemed to adore it, most of the negatives seemed to detest it. I don't understand why everyone's acting like it was 90% bad reviews. Am I gonna say it was a hit? Of course not. Do you want to say financially it's a flop? Fine, it would be nice to wait for post DVD sales to fully say but I suppose I wouldn't argue w/ that now.
I think the general consensus when the movie is viewed rationally, its not perfect, its flawed, but its not the worst thing ever. It has some good aspects and some flawed aspects. Some of us love it, some of us hate it, others fall in the middle. So what? We all have opinions and enjoyments. Is there really anyone who doesn't love a flawed piece?
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
