plus most of the critics, hated it.

Most of the note-worthy and respected critics gave it A's and B's. Why don't you research before you make a general, unintelligent comment.

No. Most of the critics hated it. Most of the PEOPLE who saw it hated it. Why wouldn't they? *BRINGS DISCUSSION BACK ON TOPICCC*: Hence the wayyy early DVD release date.

People loved the movie, and people didn't like it. You should really only say how you feel about it, unless you KNOW who liked it and who didnt. That does not seem to be what's going on.

I am however hoping this DVD release date is true. Im very excited.

No.
Half is not most.

Basic mathematics.

If you're going to bash something, at least have proper information, not what you *wish* were the case. I know you would've been squealing with glee if everyone hated it, because you act like a four-year-old, but that's not the way it turned out. Sorry, sweetheart.

Have you nothing better to do? Why don't you go poll all of the people who've seen it. That'll give you an activity. Pathetic. Obnoxious. Nauseating.

That's a pretty big generalization you've made there.

While you probably shouldn't say that most people who saw RENT hated it, it's safe to say that most people who saw RENT didn't think it was a good film.

Just because you enjoy something, it doesn't mean it's good. I enjoyed the movie and I loved watching it - but it's cinematic achievments are nowhere to be found.

I never said they were the same things.

all I said was that it's possibly to love something bad. It's also possible to hate something brilliant.

I think that, munk, is something a lot of people are losing sight of in all of this -- that you can love something flawed without thinking it's perfect. There's so much mixing of all of those things going on, and it's getting ridiculous.

I know, that's why I said it.

Unfortunately, there are those that can't distinguish between something being enjoyable and BAD or miserable and AMAZING. Oh well, not everyone can be as wise as us. After all, we DID graduate from the same high school.

Exactly. There are people who blindly love it and think it's perfect, and there are people who love it in spite of its flaws. But a lot of the camp who hated the movie -- for whatever of a million reasons -- seems to have glossed over the fact that there are people who see its imperfections and loved it anyway. I think people are forgetting that loving it doesn't mean you think it's perfect, and that thinking it's imperfect -- or even not good -- means you didn't like it.

Some prominent critics liked the film, some prominent critics didn't.

Will RENT's reputation amongst critics, film historians and movie buffs grow, diminish, or stay the same? Only time will tell.

Is the film a success? That depends on who you ask. Without question it pleased many people who saw it. In that sense is very successful.

But for a film to be an unqualified success in the eyes of the studio, a majority of it's reviews have to be favorable and it has to make more than it's production costs in the North American market.

Yes, box office in North America is only a small part of a film's potention revenue.

But domestic box office is still accorded a great deal of importance. Some might say too much importance.

A movie that does not make a lot of money domestically, is still seen as disappointment even if it does well overseas. Why? Because some industry insiders see domestic box office as an indicator of how well DVD sales will go.

Can I be an honorary graduate of your high school, Em and Munk? XD I agree, damnit. I know I've said something similar to that sometime through these tiring debates.

I enjoy the Open House icons.

You guys have hit the nail on the button and like I've said in the past...I adore the Phantom movie. I still laugh at the bad lip synching and voguing and what not, but I still love it, for it's several-many flaws.

And I really don't understand not only here on BWW but in my local paper and many other places have been saying RENT got awful reviews...since when is approximately 47% good reviews awful? Unless people expected it to do better but many here have expressed that wasn't the case w/ them...I would say it got mixed reviews, most of the positives seemed to adore it, most of the negatives seemed to detest it. I don't understand why everyone's acting like it was 90% bad reviews. Am I gonna say it was a hit? Of course not. Do you want to say financially it's a flop? Fine, it would be nice to wait for post DVD sales to fully say but I suppose I wouldn't argue w/ that now.

I think the general consensus when the movie is viewed rationally, its not perfect, its flawed, but its not the worst thing ever. It has some good aspects and some flawed aspects. Some of us love it, some of us hate it, others fall in the middle. So what? We all have opinions and enjoyments. Is there really anyone who doesn't love a flawed piece?

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
