Posted: 12/17/05 at 10:04pmRent was and is a terrible quality movie and brought nothing new to the material. The filming techniques (or lack thereof) and the design (or lack thereof) was poor. You can't argue with that. It is an unnsuccessful film and should be locked away forever. FEB 21 will be a sad day.

Posted: 12/18/05 at 8:58amWhat is REALLY FUNNY, is that most of the people here who hated RENT and are continuously bringing up the reviews, are people who are raving about The Producers, which so far has gotten the EXACT SAME divided reaction from critics !!!

The suits wonder why people stay away from movies in droves & this is one reason. The movies come out on DVD so quickly that why should you bother seeing it in the theater
When the DVD has been out a few months, I will get it for $ 10

Woah Greek. Keep your pants on.
I am not raving about the Producers. In fact, I have not SEEN the Producers (film) yet.
If you took some time to look at my avatar and actually read it, you would quickly and shamefully retract your ignorant statement.
Good day! HMMPHH!

In this day and age you can't judge the success of a movie based on a dvd release. There have been several blockbusters that have had releases very close to their theatrical debuts and while still playing overseas. In fact, a few have even come out while the movie was still in some theaters. It's all part of the marketing and "windows" in the release schedules of other movies.
Roxy - I can see your point about waiting to own versus seeing it in the theater. But at the same time - there are several movies that you just have to see on a large screen (not saying RENT is one of them) to fully enjoy them. It's just not the same. Watching something like the Lord of the Rings trilogy is fine at home, but watching it on a big screen is far more enjoyable - and even if the dvd and movie came out together - I would still pay for both.

I was not referring to you 442, simply because I rarely read your posts ! From what I've seen, all your posts are always negative, mean and vicious and there is no reason to spend even a minute of my life reading all this hostility. And if you read my comment and your vile reply you will easily see who is ignorant and rude !
And a Good day to you, too.

No. Most of the critics hated it. Most of the PEOPLE who saw it hated it. Why wouldn't they? *BRINGS DISCUSSION BACK ON TOPICCC*: Hence the wayyy early DVD release date.
Actually, you're wrong. If you look at some of the past threads, probably the first RENT review thread -- there was a whole list of A and B reviews from note-worthy critics. Please, stop being a loser. I'm not trying to say they all loved it, but I'm saying the respectable ones did...and that means something. Personally, I don't give a damn if Joe Schmoe the critic hated it. That really means nothing to me...and it also means nothing to me that you didn't like it.
But yeah, the movie didn't do well. I'm not trying to deny that. It's sad. I cried in my mind for a moment, the 2nd week after it came out and we all realized it was going downhill. Sad. But whatever.

Posted: 12/18/05 at 2:30pmRENT didn't have a strong release in theatres, but it wasn't really expected to. It was a film made with the firm (and accurate) belief that there were enough people (rentheads) out there that would go see it no matter what they heard. The studios banked on that and they managed to make some cash off of it. Was it a major blockbuster? No. Was it ****? No. Probably somewhere inbetween. To say that the film had no artistic flair or film technique is painfully ignorant. I (a film student) would firmly place Chris Columbus in the top 10 living film directors at this very moment. I was very impressed with what he did in terms of taking something firmly placed as a stage production and bringing it to life on a film reel and I think that it was as successful as any of the suits ever expected it to be.

Sony wouldn't have staged such an omnipresent advance promotional campaign if they didn't think it had any hope of crossing over beyond the fan base. The vibe from the publicists at the junket was that they were bracing themselves for something huge.
Studios generally give just release dates to media outlets before issuing formal press releases so there's no reason I can see to doubt the February 21 release date.
As for the ongoing, never-dying question, this is how I look at it: (1) not enough people wanted to see the film; and (2) not enough of those people enjoyed it enough to really spread convincing word of mouth. Yes, many people loved the film for all its flaws, but there weren't enough of those people. Just that those who loved it are the most vocal.
And, yes, I can understand loving something flawed. Hell, I enjoyed the heck out of The Producers. But it has many problems of its own (which the poor reviews have understandably calle dout), but it won me over all the same. With Rent, it just didn't. But your mileage may vary.
In closing... DVD on February 21 sounds about right. The big question remains though if this will be a barebones release or a fully loaded special edition--or if the latter will be available down the line (and Sony is one of those studios that frequently pull such a trick--e.g. Black Hawk Down, The Grudge...).
