The Brooks Atkinson is WAY too small for WSS. The easiest is for LB to close, and WSS taking the palace. It is also the most probable.

Or not.

Posted: 7/26/08 at 11:21amI wouldn't discount the Arthur Laurents factor in all of this speculation. He had one of his biggest hits at the Palace (the original La Cage aux Folles) and I think if he wants the Palace for West Side Story, he'll get it. He's not going to want a second-tier theatre like the Nederlander for it and as pointed out earlier, the Brooks Atkinson is way too small. The Neil Simon is the other possibility, but I still think the economics of producing West Side Story favor putting it in the larger Palace.

Young Frankenstien kicked out The Pirate Queen.
Miss Saigon bumped Les Misérables to the Imperial
And if I remember correctly, The Act bumped the Wiz to the Broadway.
West Side Story is a bankable title, hasn't had a revival in almost 30 years, and is being directed by Arthur Laurents, if it wanted the Shubert it could probably get it.

The Pirate Queen wasn't kicked out. It closed because it sucked and was a horrible show.
Although I do love SJB.

>even though is produced by nederlander, do you think, if they ABSOLUTELY had to, they would put it in a Non-Nederlander theatre?<
They've already said it is going into a Nederlander theatre. And why would James Nederlander, who is co-producing the West Side Story revival, want all of that money going into his competitors pockets?

I agree that The Pirate Queen's closing had nothing to do with the agreed upon mark when a producer signs a contract with a show. The agreed upon mark meaning that if a shows profits tank to an agreed upon point then the owners of the theatre could kick out whatever show is in their theatre. They had enough money to go for a little bit longer then they did. However, not that much longer and then once Ridel published his article talking about how Stroman visited the Hilton during Pirate Queen rehersals the show didn't have a chance.
I do think that the Nederlanders will consider their options. A show that is currently playing at the palace that just picked up on business after a VERY long period of time of just doing so so in the box office. Verses a very anticipated revival by a legendary Broadway director.
