Posted: 7/25/08 at 5:28pmDepends on how big the new theater will be...the old one would definitely be way too small for this gigantic production...also, you might want to put a question mark at the end of your original post so people don't eat you alive on here :).

I really don't see LEGALLY BLONDE going anywhere very soon...it's one of those shows that doesn't give up. It's always done reasonably well (nothing painfully bad...at least not a constant month or two months of painfully bad ticket sales) and now that the reality show was a bigger hit than anyone expected, ticket sales should only get better. Maybe it will close quietly come the mid-fall/winter months when no one goes to the theater, but it is a really persistent show that isn't going to close without a fight.
WSS would fit beautifully into the Palace, but LB (unless they move it to, say, the Nederlander which I do NOT see happening) isn't going anywhere without a fight.

OMG You are so funny! Not.
Here is what I think. If I could do it to keep LB.
Move ITH to the Nederlander after a total renovation.
Put WSS into the Richard Rodgers
and leave LB in the palace.

That would actually work really well...IN THE HEIGHTS could fit perfectly into the Nederlander and WSS would probably fare fine in the Rodgers...although they may want to take over the Palace so that it finally has a solid, sell-out hit, which it hasn't in a very long time.
But I like that idea.

Posted: 7/25/08 at 5:48pmYes but that's assuming the producers of In the Heights and Legally Blonde would be willing to move their shows.

Posted: 7/25/08 at 5:49pmI just think with a TONY Winning Best Musical, it gives the Nederlander the best reason to renovate. And the scaffolding outside fits the look of the show. Maybe WSS Could take the Palace and LB move to Richard Rodgers? WHO KNOWS?!
#12re: WSS At the Henry Miller Theatre
Posted: 7/25/08 at 5:50pmLB could move into a smaller house, making it easier to sell out.

Yes, but that would be a HUGE financial gamble. New sets would have to be rebuilt, scenes would probably have to be reblocked, etc etc etc...
I highly, highly doubt that they would move around two other shows just so WSS could take the Palace. Don't count on ITH moving to the Nederlander, LB moving to the Rodgers, and WSS taking the Palace...it's just all too much work.
What would work about ITH moving alone is that the sets will probably not have to be altered too much if at all at the Nederlander...LB is another story entirely.

Once again... Roundabout doesn't own Henry Miller's Theatre, though they are negotiating a 20 year lease. Roundabout does have something planned for this season at Henry Miller's, and it isn't West Side Story.
And this insistence that shows are going to play musical chairs in order for West Side Story to have a home is ridiculous. Won't happen.

WSS not going to the Miller b/c Nederlanders do NOT own it.
The Richard Rodgers does not have enough wingspace to hold a show like WSS.
WSS will definately not take the Nederlander and WILL take the Palace.
Remember: at anytime that a show is doing below (X) and that is what the producers and theatre owners agreed on, then the theatre owners can at anytime make the show close or move.
I think the Nederlanders are waiting for LB to do below that (X) aka agreement (which will prob. happen in the winter), then make the producers move out.

I just don't see Legally Blonde closing after its biggest numbers to date.
This moving In the Heights stuff is crazy, and people are starting to confuse an idea with a real rumor, which this isn't. While, yes, they won the TOny and doing well, moving theatre's would be too costly. All of these shows have different producers, Broadway isn't one big organization that can say "poof" and convince a producer to move their show for "the greater good".

Posted: 7/25/08 at 7:27pmDon't confuse summer box office with what is going to happen after Labor Day. All but the biggest shows fall off a cliff in September.
#18re: WSS At the Henry Miller Theatre
Posted: 7/25/08 at 9:55pmSo you don't think the spike had anything to do with the reality show? Normally, I'd call this a Summer jump, but I have a feeling Blonde will hang on for a bit longer.

Posted: 7/25/08 at 9:58pmI think the problem will be that the summer bump and the reality tv show bump will occur and are occurring at the same time, so went September hits the show will lose momentum. They would have been better served to have the winner announced in late August/early September.

I agree that this whole show musical chairs thing is stupid. First off I don't think any of the shows that were talked about are doing so bad that they have reached the point in their contracts where the owners can kick them out. I view the Legally Blonde reality show as one last attempt to bumpt up ticket sales before the prodcers close the show on their own merrits. When the bump for the reality show ends then chances are they are going to close on their own and not because anyone is forcing them to.
I don't think that In The Heights would move at all. The Nederlander organization can't force any of their shows to move or close if they are doing solid business which In The Heights is doing right now. If it got so bad that the Nederlanders would force the producers to close the show then that would be a different story altogether.
Keep in mind as it has been said that the Richard Rodgers literally has next to no wing space so it would be impossable to put this ( what is supposed to be) mammoth production of West Side Story there.
The reason why Blonde won't move (other then the fact that it would cost them money that they don't have now) is that the sets were custom made to fit the Palace. The Palace is a musical's set designers dream because it is so big that they can do with it whatever they want and get really creative. Those sets wouldn't fit into a smaller theatre at all. The only way I could even consider thinking of Legally Blonde moving is if this conversation were to be taking place a few years down the line as oppose to today and Blonde's tour finished. Then there might be the smaller tour sets that they could use on Broadway at a smaller theatre a la Beauty and the Beast.

Given that the day after the reality show I got an email about 45% discounts on LB (which I deleted and deleted because I couldn't care less about the show), I don't think they're getting as big of a bump as they anticipated.

Posted: 7/26/08 at 10:02amIf Grease closed, could it fit into the Brooks-Atkinson? If nothing closes, I don't think they will have a choice but to put it in the Nederlander. LB doesn't look like its going anywhere anytime soon. All of the Nederlander theatres have healthy shows right now. Well maybe Grease isn't as healthy as the others but it is still running!

All this LB closing stuff is annoying
This show is ALWAYS in the top 10 (normally much higher) for tickets sold. The summer audience and reality show audience will keep its sales high for months yet and once the dead season starts the show will have made enough money to survive a dip (like ever other show does).
The chances are that LB will hit the million mark this week and probably next week too.
Now LB moving to another house is a very big possibility, you dont close a show down when its doing well
