Sorry to be starting another one of these threads but I wasnt really sure where to look after searching and not finding much. I have a ticket for WSS Matinee September 16th but I'm a bit unsure if I should try getting rid of the ticket in favor of Shrek?
I'm a fan of Sutton Foster and having read all the less than positive things said about WSS recently I'm a bit unsure what to do.
I'm also seeing Next to Normal, Hair and Bye Bye Birdie that week. So which do you think would be a better option, Shrek vs WSS.
Thanks :)

You are going to get diverse opinions. PERSONALLY, I didn't care for either WSS OR Shrek and wouldn't reccommend EITHER.
Sorry to be much so little help, but I assume your responses here will be 50/50. (The rest of your week looks great though!!

I agree, your going to get some diverse opinions.
I haven't seen WSS, but have heard mixed things about it. In my opinion, I'd just stick with West Side Story because it is a hotter ticket. Plus you will avoid the trouble of selling tickets, although I am sure someone would buy them from you (perhaps someone who loses at lotto).
On the other hand, WSS will probably be around longer than Shrek. You can probably see WSS on another trip into the city. How often do you go to NYC?
Sorry to not be much of a help to you!

Personally Wishiwashere no matter what oppinion anyone here gives you- You need to be your own critic. You have to figure for all the "less than positive" reviews you heard about WSS theres going to be just as much people giving it a postive review.
At the end of the day it comes down to what you like. I would just stick to West Side Story you already have the ticket, so take the chance!

Posted: 8/24/09 at 10:47pmIf you must pick either of those I would go see WSS...then again I havent gotten a chance to see either, but from what i've heard form people who have, their thoughts are very mixed...the other shows you are seeing are good but I would recomend 9 to 5 in replace of Shreak/WSS just because I personally go for seeing shows that are about to close over ones that from what we know will still be around long enough for you to hopefully see it. Hope this helps!

It really depends on what kind of musical you're "in the mood" for
WSS has some incredible numbers with America, Somewhere, A Boy Like That/I Have A Love (maybe I Feel Pretty too) but the rest of the production falls flat and it's such a downer of a piece. It's not the heaviest piece emotionally, but subject matter like murder, rape tacked onto a somewhat boring production doesnt help it overall.
Shrek on the other hand is fun, light-hearted albeit a little silly. Go for high production values and interesting, eye-catching visuals - which WSS severely lacks. On the other hand, Shrek is a carbon copy of the film and doesnt add anything interesting or new - the songs arent particularly memorable.
Frankly, I was yawning and quite bored during a majority of WSS - Shrek wasnt my favorite show, but I was never bored or glancing at my watch.
I say, rent WSS the movie and go see Shrek.

West Side Story.
I love Sutton Foster too (and pretty much the entire cast of Shrek), but that wasn't enough to save it for me.

Posted: 8/25/09 at 12:01pmI would go with WSS. It may have flaws, but Shrek does too. West Side is a classic, and it is back on Broadway. I wouldn't pass up that opportunity. Also, Karen Olivo's performance is something in my opinion not to be missed.

I don't understand how so many of you guys hate West Side Story THAT much. I thought it was very good. You must see it before Karen Olivo leaves.
But if these are your only two shows you could go to go to West Side Story. If you can go to different shows besides these go see Hair or In The Heights.

Definitely WSS - despite Olivo's absence when I went and Laurents' well-documented bowlderizing, the production was kept afloat by the legendary music and some great dancing from the ensemble. And Scaglione was lovely.
I hated the Shrek movie, so I have no interest in seeing the musical.

I can't say WSS strongly enough! I am usually fairly easy to please. I went to see Shrek because I like to try to see all of the Best Musical nominees. I found Shrek to be so disappointing. If there was such a thing as a money back guarantee I would have asked for a refund. Talk about selling out! I really liked Millie and Caroline or Change...and I couldn't belive that Tesori wrote all 3!
