re: Waiting for Guffman...the musical!!

My favorite line-"Naminaminaminamin...." when there's supposed to be small talk in the background and this is what Catherine O'Hara is saying, much too loudly!

Actually I believe they're all saying "hub hub hub hub hub."

"I was shopping for my wife Bonnie - I buy most of her clothes - and Mrs. Pearl was in the same store. And we were talking about pantyhose. She was saying that - well, that's not the point of the story... the point is you find people... and I got Bonnie a wonderful pantsuit."

FOAnatic---The "asides" as you call them would merely come off as theatrical inner monologues on stage, instead of docu-narrative "talking heads" confessing to a camera lens, a director, and an unseen movie audience. That would defeat the purpose to have them just face the theatre audience and rattle on about working at the Dairy Queen (for example). This is standard fare for many musicals, song presentation, straight play monologues, etc. No big deal on the stage.

It would kill the very ingredient that was so special in the film.

re: Waiting for Guffman...the musical!!

I wrote my own version of this show. PM me if you'd like me to send it to you.
What I realized is that in the film, the interviews express the inner thoughts of the characters. In musicals, songs do that, so each monologue (or parts of each) is put into a song.
Again, if you're interested, PM me.

re: Waiting for Guffman...the musical!!

Also thought i'd add stated by parker posey that Chris G. has over 60 hours of extra footage stored away from Guffman that no one has seen.

Great quotes..but you forgot one:

"I can't work with you people...and you wanna know why? Because you're BASSSSSSTARD people."

(maybe slightly paraphrased)

There'll always be a place for me at the Dairy Queen.
Do you know what happens when you let Veal Prince Orloff sit in an oven too long?

re: Waiting for Guffman...the musical!!

And by the way, does anyone know what

"Blue sky, blue sea
Blue grass, blue tree
Red is the fire in our hearts that keeps this country strong
Red is the fire in our hearts that helps us sing this song"

Was that an original song written just for some children's choir to sing for the movie (because the accompaniment sounds like the "orchestrations" for the film) or does it really exist?

No, apparently it was an actual performance captured at a local festival held in Lockhart, TX (near Austin)where the exterior of the town hall for "Guffman" was shot. You'll hear about this if you listen to Christopher Guest's and Eugene Levy's commentary on the DVD.

FYI...for anyone who likes this movie and hasn't seen the special features section of the DVD, you absolutely must buy/rent it and see Parkey Posey's "dramatic monologue" which she performs for her audition. The first time I saw it I almost fell off the sofa laughing. I won't ruin it with a quote, but you've GOT to see it. Beyond hysterical.

re: Waiting for Guffman...the musical!!

Such an underappreciated film.

Catherine O'Hara deserved to win an Oscar especially for the "Oasis" bit and the "penile reduction" scene.

When seeing "City of Angels" in LA I handed a salad spoon to Fred Willard! :)

Oh, that audition scene!

They won't do a musical...I guess this means no Remains of the Day lunchbox.

Parker Posey barbecuing that lowly chicken wing ALWAYS kills me. Always.

Hilarous film. I really don't think it would work as a stage show, though. So I'm glad it won't be done.

re: Waiting for Guffman...the musical!!

If this were ever to actually go onstage, it would be something so different. Guest's mockumentaries are very improv-ed, like a monthlong workshop entirely filmed, and the best pieces taken out. If it were put onstage, it would need a definitive script that, while it could be strayed from here and there, would need to be more sharpened before even touching the stage. Whereas the movie is sharpened after being filmed, much in editing.

re: Waiting for Guffman...the musical!!

it wouldn't work, and it would piss off the fan base of the movie, because it would be a disaster.

but it is one of my favs of all time, and IMO, the best guest-Levy mockumentery.

re: Waiting for Guffman...the musical!!

if christopher guest won't agree to turn it into a musical, then they should make a musical of the Ector theatre scandal in texas. it's the same story, accept more complicated. anyone else agree?

re: Waiting for Guffman...the musical!!

It's a shame it'll never happen.

Then again, those My Dinner With Andre action figures would be too small for the audience to see onstage.
